This is driving me nuts. Out of the blue my computer has started freezing non-stop. When I boot up for the first time it will automatically freeze once I reach my desktop. I will reboot and then it will be ok while I go online for anywhere between 5-15 minutes. (unless I try and download some music then it will automatically freeze). I have to start over from the beginning and this is driving me mad! I am tech challenged, I run Windows 98 on a pentium 4 processor if that helps. Please someone help before I throw this computer out the window!

It sounds like you may need to buy more memory, especially if youre downloading music.
I had that prob. and went to Staples and got some memory for like $50 bucks (installation is easy, it gives you directions, you will need to unscrew the case on your tower) In the meantime - you can 1. defragment 2.always clear your cookies and 3.delete programs and files you dont use to clear up space.

Anyway, it was like lightning fast after I actually installed more memory.

Sounds to me like your memory has gone corrupt

try running memtest86 on your pc a few times...
    it will clarify a lot.
just google for it and you should be able to find it somewhere from there.

hope to have been of assistance

Sorry, but there is a distinct difference between a lack of memory and the memory being corrupt.

Though I have to give you credit for thinking about the RAM, most people just say "have you tried turning it off and on again?" :)

before just buying more mem, you should know the reason(, else, it might infest your new mem as well (learnt that last week in school ;) )

You're still on Win98? Why? I think, along with checking for corrupt memory, you need to upgrade your OS.

Win98 is defunct and no longer has microsoft support, like they "supported" Win98 at all anyway...

EDIT : Win98 sucked so bad i decided to stay with Win95 until WinXP AKA WinXV(xtra viruses) came out, if i could afford it I'd get a Mac Pro...

None the less, this is not normal

btw, I din't think there's antything wrong with win 98 that's related to this subject ...
    XP is flawed as well
maybe you should try linux;) , no, you could try updating your OS, but I doubt if that will change anthing at all
    no offense, ItsEvolutionBaby74 & Animal ... :)

    *EDIT*
I wouldn't say win98 sucked harder than 95 or any windows (except maybe the windows server or 2000pro)

It would help if you provided more specs to your computer. The OS and CPU are a good start for me to help you figure this out. What kind of memory do you have? What apps are you using on your computer (specifically, what browser and what download programs)? Is your AV program up-to-date?

One major problem is the OS, as already mentioned. Say what you want to say about Microsoft and Windows and the BSOD, but the fact is that ever since installing the fixed SP2 and using Mozilla as my browser, my system has run extremely stable.

I am at work right now so I won't be able to try these out for a day or two. Thanks so far to all the suggestions! I will try them all. As far as the last post I will have to look up some terms just to answer your questions. I am using IE as my browser. I will try the defrag and I've already cleared cookies. Thanks again and I will update by tomorrow!

Well, the differences between Win95 and Win98 were verey slight and in tests Win98 was actually slower than Win95 so i dunno...

I tried this but when I attempt to open it it tries to open in real player which does not work. Then I save it to a floppy disk and it won't open from there no matter what program I try. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm afraid that you may have W.32.RontokBro@mm which is a mass mailing worm that typically causes system instability.

Click the link for detailed removal instructions if you do have it, run Norton Antivirus first or if possible Avast! Antivirus.

P.S.: The link will be useless if you are not infected with the adformentioned mass-mailer so run the scan as soon as possible...
