Why no Seattle proper?

Do you think PJ doesn't play a proper hometown show because Seattle crowds are notorious for being crappy?

I dont get it.

I would prefer a Gorge show to be honest. None of the venues in downtown Seattle are big enough for PJ and Key Arena and Qwest Field are jokes for musical acts. But seriously, at this point, I'd love to have anything. ;p

Stone plays here with Brad. Mike plays here w/ Flight to Mars and played here with The Rockfords. Matt plays here in side projects. Ed won't play a solo show here (unless it is super-small/super-secret), and PJ won't play here. Gotta be Ed.

  • I fail to see how the key arena is different from many of the arenas I've been in. I've seen 4 or 5 good shows there over the years and its a pretty convenient drive up for me (unlike the gorge) and I know of a great independent hotel in the area. I can't speak about qwest field though.

Since when does the Key Arena suck for concerts? I have always thought it has good sound and not a bad seat in the house.

    What's wrong with the Key?

And since when has Seattle crowds been notorious for being crappy?

This thread is all kinds of news to me considering they played 3 shows at The Gorge, which draws a primary Puget Sound (Seattle area) crowd.

Good points about the Key, fragileblake & aNiMaL. I've been to arena shows in a bunch of states, and the Key is no better or worse. No arena has the acoustics of Benaroya or Schnitzer or a symphony hall. People talk about a venue like MSG, but the acoustics aren't great, and it is an old place. It just has mystique and history. There isn't anything magical about the sound in there.

  • In another thread somebody mentioned qwest field. I had no idea they only serve Jones soda over a coke or pepsi contract (according to wikipedia). Thats badass. Could they sell out qwest field? I remember hearing some huge attendance figures for those Gorge shows, it might be possible. Man it would be wild to see them in that big of a place.

I just dislike the acoustics in the Key. And I haven't ever heard about us Seattleites being crappy crowds

Yeah, it is true about Jone's Soda and Qwest Field. It is the only venue in the NFL that does not have either Coke or Pepsi.

Good call. I've been to a lot of different shows at many different arenas around the US and the KEY is easily one of my favorites. One of the best sounding arenas and you're right, no bad seats. Especialy in the lower bowl.

when you compare it to the accoustics at other "arenas", it's def above average.

I believe they could. The Rolling Stones w/ the Dave Matthews Band played Qwest with just Seattle area fans. I think PJ could do a hometown show that would draw from all over the Northwest and the country in general. I'm sure the stadium could be sold out.

The Coliseum has always been the best place for a rock show in Seattle.

Nothing is wrong with the KEY! Great place to see a show.

Ed was the one who said at the Gorge crowd was so much better than a seattle crowd. I am pretty sure its a common perception. Everytime I have seen a seattle show its been a sleeper of a crowd.

as much as i enjoyed the Gorge shows, if/when they play the Seattle region i really hope it's downtown...so i guess that would be Key Arena.

don't care about the history and aura of the Gorge...

i would really enjoy hanging around the city all day and hopping over to the arena for a show...would beat hanging around the hotel or moses lake or the surrounding areas...

    Esther's here and she's sick?

hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks
  • Couldn't agree more. If I'm going to camp and be out in nature thats one thing, if I'm going to see a show, thats a different thing entirely. For me a show at the Key would be a 2.5 hour drive, a day spent hanging out in my favorite seattle haunts (marveling at how much more livable a city Portland is) and a night spent at my favorite hotel up there. A show at the Gorge is a 5 hour drive, a boring one at that, probably staying at some shithole in moses lake, horrible food options, sitting on my ass doing nothing before the shows and an atrocious exit from the amphitheater.

I'm with you too. The Gorge is a magical venue and just overall spectacular, but the show itself is the only thing good about it. The drive, traffic, and nothing to do. That's not camping at the Gorge. It's a huge drunken party and I got all of that out of my system 10 years ago. Give me downtown Seattle and 2 1/2 hours less driving each way any day.

Well, I guess going to the gorge from Portland you do get that nice scenic drive through Yakima that never seems to end...

I don't know this nonsense of Seattle crowds, but as far as I've seen, we've had some pretty kick ass shows here. I mean, it's great seeing them at Benaroya, and the Key. The Showbox was brilliant, and of course the Gorge... Back in the day, Seattle was notorious for having some of the best shows in the West. We still do, the Key is a great venue, and I would love nothing more than to see PJ there again. You know where else would be great? Lake Union! They could also play at Memorial Stadium. I've seen Ed and Matt there before.

quest field was designed to be LOUD when Paul Allen had it built.... it is acoustically designed to echo, making it a GREAT stadium for football, Loudest crowd in the NFL...... but SHITTY for music, the Stones/Dave Matthews show sounded TERRIBLE.. echoes, distorted.... jut a fucking MESS!

Yep, he said Van 1 crowd was shit at Van 2. But Van 1's crowd IMO was better.

  • Even if a venue is too small for Pearl Jam.. It would be amazing if they were to play in a place like the Showbox! It would be nuts! I love the Showbox primarily on how personal it is with the musician(s) and the fact that you're basically inches away from them if up front.

they were... i don't have words to describe it. yeah, PJ at the showbox kicked ass. It was 2004, Vote For a Change? I stood outside for hours before Tom said I could go in. I was directly in front of Mikey, and the great part was that he recognized me! I had met him the year before at Bumbershoot. Come on PJ... play SEATTLE!!! My last time, here in the states. Then you can go on a HUGE Europe tour and I'll be there, at every show.

Never gonna happen.. I remember years ago like 10 or 12, One of the guys ruled out ever playing there. Let's face it the T-DOME is THE worst venue in the NW for concerts.

I disagree (although its certainly nothing special). I would say that the clark county amphitheater, columbia meadows and the white river amphitheater are all worse than the tacoma dome.

Columbia isn't that bad. It's just not in a very accessible location.
