i just dont know which one to go with. it definitely seems like xm has more music stations and stuff. but sirius is supposed to be better for sports, stern, and just a better all around system. i have heard that xm spent a lot of money to be the first and sirius spent a lot of money to be the best. i am more interested in the music than i am talk shows. but i also want the most user friendly system that i can play in the car, at work, and at home.........can anyone please share their thoughts with me?!?!

thanks

I have Sirius. I love it man. I listen to it all the time, even at home on my computer. Now if you got xm and wanted to do that, my understanding is that you would have to pay extra to do so. I think Sirius plays better music. My friend has XM and the song selection just isn't what I've come to expect from my Sirius. Then new portable sirius player looks pretty cherry. I'd say go with Sirius for no other reason than not to give Clear Channel any more of your money. They are the money behind XM. I think that Sirius has better sound as well. Having listened to both of them on the same setup at the circuit city.

  • Actually, you can listen to XM online for free- it comes with your subscription. Also, I'm not sure if Sirius offers it, but you can sign up for a free three day trial online with XM. I would look into if Sirius offers the same trial, and go with whichever one you like best.

Go here to sign up for the XM trial-

My boss was added to his parents xm a while ago so he could listen to baseball games and he mentioned that he would have to pay to listen to xm unlike his sirius subscription. If this has changed then I'm glad. But I'm listening to Sirius online right now. And they do have free trials at sirius.

  • xm xm xm xm, xm is is the best trust me, ive had both, siriius is big and bulky, xm is easy, most rock stations, opie and anthony, baseball, hockey, live concerts, no extra fees for any of that, great stuff, dont go with sirius cause of howard, youll regret it, sirius is good, but xm is great

  • I had both and ended up keeping just XM... but you will be happy with either.. you will most likely never listen to FM again.

Now.. a few minor differences I noticed. I only listen to the music channels so I won't really comment on talk or sports.

XM: Better 'New Rock' stations. They have the market down on new alternative rock.. hands down.

Sirius: Better 'Classic Rock' stations. They own this format.. hands down.

XM: Less Repetition, but less songs you will know too. This was a bonus for me because I grow tired of hearing the same old same old.. however some people want a more 'hits driven' format. XM does much more in the way of deep cuts. For instance.. they would play PJ cuts like 'Leash, Breath, Hail Hail' while Sirius would stick pretty much to 'even flow, betterman etc'. XM is great in that instance if you are fan of PJ.. but a casual fan might only want evenflow, yellow ledbetter etc.

So if sports are not your thing.. Sirius if you are a Classic Rock Fan who likes to hear the familiar stuff.. XM if you lean more towards newer rock with deeper playlists.

    hope this helps

I have Sirius and My Wife has XM.

Sirius is the better option. People above have mentioned some valid points. It all comes down to what you as a listener prefer. The fact that Clear Channel has their paws on XM is reason enough not to go with XM.

    Here are a few benefits:

    Sirius
    NFL
    NBA
    NHL
    NASCAR (2007)
    Stern
    Margaritaville Radio (Jimmy Buffett)
    80's Station is waaaay better
    Classic Rock is better
Octane....one of their channels kicks Ass.

    XM
    MLB
    Opie & Ant
    ACC Football
    Good Current Music Selection

First, it is free to listen to XM on-line with your normal car subscription or whatever.

Sports, it comes down to whether you like baseball (XM) or football (Sirius).

I listen to XM mainly for the talk. XM has all the major news outlets, CNN, CNN News, FoxNews, etc.....

Sports, XM has the ESPN, ESPN News, Fox Sports Radio, etc....

The comedy channel on XM is freakin' hilarious.

Clear Channel is not the devil.

I don't have Sirius, so I don't know how their talk radio is. They may have the same selection as XM. I also don't listen to the music too much either (not because of selection, but I'd listen to cd's before any radio).
  • XM all the way....opie and anthony, ron and fez,and great music.......what else do you need?!?

    one word...STERN..that's why sirius..

Depends if you like smart or low-brow humor.
  • I do activations and billing for Sirius! It's a fantastic product.. Has anyone seen the 2 latest radios that have been released? One is the XACT visor model, and it operates as the name suggests, attached to the visor of any vehicle.

The second is called the Starmate replay.. Now that is a sexy unit! It has a powder blue screen, and mounts in several different ways... on the dash, indash, on the window.....With over 100 fm channels to choose from for setting your fm transmitter, whick i do a hundred times a day for those setting up new accounts, or travelling through diferent states or provinces, as the case may be.

as for content... I have heard it said by some former clients of XM that there are commercials on the music channels, and just yesterday a woman called, and was saying that she wanted service in english, not in a foreign language. She was an XM client who cancelled and came to us...

lets compare numbers, shall we? Howard has a fanbase of 18 million, granted, not all of the 18 million love him... but that doesnt matter... love him, hate him, they follow him anywhere he goes! What are the numbers for Opie and Anthony? I cant say, cause they bore me to tears! I have been a loyal Howard fan for many years, being in Canada, limits my Howard experience, but I find other ways to get my Howard fix!

And again, it is true that Sirius hasn't turned a profit yet> The reason being, that they dump all proceeds back into the company to make it bigger and better!

Thats my 2 cents for now

PJ can be heard on Octane and The Pulse!

And yes, Sirius offers a free online trial, and just for the record, it has always been free to listen to sirius online with a paid subscription, XM used to charge extra, but changed that to keep up with us!!!!! BOOYA!

I love XM. I cant really compare the 2, because I dont know anyone who has Sirius so I havent tried it out. I would imagine both services carry about the same stuff channel wise. The prices are the same now I believe. The music stations I listen to on XM are commercial free and very rarely do you ever here a dj. I think whichever service you chose, you will be happy. Its awesome compared to regular FM. So much more variety. Hardly any commercials.
My favorite part about XM is a pretty small thing, but its getting out of work on Friday and listening to a show they have on the Rock Station I listen to called "Faded Flannel" which is an hour of nothing but music from the Northwest with a heavy emphasis on Seattle bands.

I have never heard XM so I can only speak about Sirius. I got it because of Stern and to listen to Saints games. I got it in the middle of August when the preseason started and I have been loving it ever since!!

I do know XM had something like an all Pearl Jam weekend or they at least played a concert. From what I have heard on Sirius it is true what everyone is saying that they mostly play the hits. I do hear "Deep" on Octane pretty regularly though. I heard "Nothingman" the day I got it installed in my car. Last Friday Audioslave was in the studio on Octane and they played a lot of Audioslave, Rage, Soundgarden, and Temple of the Dog...a great ride home! They played "Room a Thousand Years Wide"!!! They play "Down Rodeo" by Rage pretty regularly too.

I love it. I listen to The Spectrum a lot which is similiar to KFOG (world class rock) and Classic Rewind. Left of Center (indie rock) is good. It turned me on to the new Bob Mould cd. I can't remember the last time regular radio turned me on to good music.

Quakechick, pull some strings to get them to play more PJ obscure stuff!!!

Also FYI, Sirius also has CNN, FoxNews, etc.

XM has the only portable live radio on the market that allows you to record 5 hours of programming. You can use it like a walkman, hook it up to your car and home stereo.

Sirius portable device is more expensive than XM's and doesn't allow you to listen live while using it as a portable device.

And XM has baseball, all the teams all season long. Definitely the best sport on the radio...

Not sure whether this will factor into your decision or not, but DirecTV will start carrying the XM music channels starting in Nov. and I believe Dish will be carrying Sirius (if they aren't already).

We have XM at our office and everyone really likes it. Fred, Ethel, XM Cafe are great channels and all those play some pretty deep PJ cuts. Never heard Sirius so can't comment on that one.

We had Classic Rewind (Sirius) on last night while we were playing poker and it was amazing. They played some great songs...Promised Land (Springsteen), Blood on the Scarecrow (Melancamp), Dreampolice (Cheap Trick).

Sirius is the best purchase I have made since my dvd player.
