Legal yet unrestricted Music Downloads?

Do they exist? I haven't had an MP3 player very long and have been satisfied with converting and listening to my CD collection, but now I'd like to download some music.

I don't need to collect a ton of songs, so those subscription services aren't for me.

Is there anywhere that sells you unrestricted versions of the songs? I don't mind paying up to a dollar a song, but I want to be able to load it, re-load it, burn it and play it from multiple computers and devices.

I'm not giving it away or taking from anyone else. I just want to buy some songs and have them for my own unrestricted personal use.

I downloaded a few from one place and of course I can only play them on the computer that downloaded them, they won't play on my player and the CD burning software on that computer won't make an audio CD from the WMA files.
