DVD or CD disc?

I want to burn a movie onto a CD to play on my DVD player. Do I need a DVD-R disc or can I use a CD-R? PLEASE, any help is appreciated. Thanks everyone.

    Burn to cd= less quality
    Burn to dvd=same as original

    also need to make sure player can support Video Cds (VCD)
    some players will, some won't
