Using AOL as an ISP => trying to send mail via Outlook?

So my high speed cable connection froze up and died; WOW, my provider, says it will take 1-2 weeks for a techie to come out to take a look at it. Meanwhile, I've had no internet access and I've been having MAJOR WITHDRAWAL.
So I remember I have an AOL account, dig up an old 56K modem and use AOL's dial up connection to get on the internet - which is how I'm posting to you now.
My problem is trying to check my normal mail through Outlook. For instance I can receive incoming mail from my email accounts, but I can't SEND email from these same accounts because of some SMTP error.
I tried changing around the SMTP configuration in Outlook - changed the port to 587 and back, enabled smtp.aol.com, ticked the box that indicates that my mail server requires authentication, etc. but still no send-mail luck.
Anyone have any experience with this? I've been searching the web (on 56k it kinda sucks) and all the help sites I've found only deal with how to check AOL mail using Outlook.
Thanks in advance...

More than likely your High Speed ISP e-mail account can only me accessed with Outlook over their IP addess.....not from another ISP. So you have to use the web mail as though you were not at home.
Did you find this site
http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/imap/
or do what animal said and try to access via webmail.
