To password protect your computer when you walk away from it on Windows XP, follow these steps:

* Right click on your desktop. A drop down menu box will appear. Select "Properties."

* The display properties for the desktop will appear. Click on the "Screen Saver" tab. See Fig. 2

* Click the arrow on the drop down list for "Screen Saver." Select the screen saver you would like.

* Click the up/down arrows on the "Wait" box to set the time lapse before your screen saver starts. Five minutes is a good choice.

* Check the box in front of "On resume, password protect." If you have Windows 2000, it may just say "Password Protect." If you already have a Windows password, check the box in front of "On resume, display Welcome Screen"

* Click "OK" or "Apply" and close out of the Display Properties Box.

* To login when your screen saver is running, you can: move your mouse; hit the enter key; or click Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Any of these will bring up your login screen. Type in your Novell or Windows password, click "OK" or hit the enter key and you will be logged in to your computer.

welcome screen should prompt you for a password - if you have one set up for your XP user account

and you also should set that screen saver much lower ... like 1 or 2 minutes

we tell our people to actually do this

before you walk away... hit CTRL - ALT - DEL and then Lock Computer (or something similar

i work in HR so it's sensitive data. we don't want anyone's machine sitting wide open

let me know if this helps you

    Hey guys,

    Thanks for responding!

I did get it to work finally. I set it to resume to the Windows screen and I have to click on my Windows username and enter my password there, so it's effective.

Problem was I was getting impatient waiting 10 minutes for my screensaver to come on to test it each time. Duh. The lightbulb finally went off, I set it to 1 minute, then checked it out a few times.

So yes.. it does work from the picture slide show and I'm a happy girl!

    Thanks Al & Lou :D

Me too. Since I'm in IT in a bank we have high security and if we don't lock our PC when we walk away co-workers will sit and send emails to other people from us, as a lesson! Usually we have to wind up bringing food or paying for lunches due to those emails!!

I have to lock it every time I leave my desk no matter what!

If it's a work enviro I'd suggest using the Windows+L or Ctrl+Alt+Del method for locking your computer.

I work in HR too, and it just so happens that our friendly IT department has the whole company setup where it goes to screensaver after 2 inactive minutes. I can't even edit it to lower it to one.

kind of pisses me off cause I could be on the phone for two minutes and then have to log in

That is pretty harsh. We have everyone set at 25 minutes. And it's also unchangeable for any user in the company. :)
