How to compress a digital video?

I have two 135MB mpg video files that I want to compress the file size, but still retain as much quality as possible.

Is there a user friendly freebie (or trial) program that can do this?

try auto gordian knot. that's what i use to compress video to xvid/divx etc.. from dvd. there's many other free app's over at http://www.videohelp.com . check it out.
