Ipod help

I moved to a different laptop, and have some music on this one now. I want to keep all the old music in the Ipod and add the new one. I chose "manually update", but it's not updating.
It asked me if I want to substitute the old library with the new one, and I obviously don't. I mean, I want to keep everything that's on the old one and add the new one.
Is that too much to ask?
A friend pointed out a webpage at Apple on how to bring your old computer library on the new computer, but I don't want to do that (it's a lot of music, and I'd rather keep the new computer leaner). I want to keep the old library on the Ipod and add what I have in the new library.

... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

You are best to have one library per machine and that machine should be authorized with your iTunes account (if you have one).
