I got my brand spankin' new laptopn. It's an HP nc6400 widescreen with 2 gigs of RAM, a 7200 speed SATA 60 Gig hard drive, 256 graphics memory card, 1.8 GHz dual core Intel processor. Vista Enterprise edition and Office 2007. Fucking SWEET!!!!

I have tested Vista and all it's betas for the last year. Using the final product as my everyday computer is great! It is really easy on the eyes with the new Areo theme. The search feature is quick and extensive! It searches Outlook even if Outlook isn't open. Not to mention the new Office 2007.....holy damn what an improvement!!! I enjoying it needless to say. :D

I tell ya what though; this is the first time I have had IE7 after being a Firefox user for a long time......I miss spell check. While IE finally has tabbed browsing.....Firefox added spell-check on their most recent version and it helps a lot when your posting on message boards. I am back to copy & pasting everything into Word to spell-check it again.

It works with some exceptions which they haven't worked out yet. I'll wait until Firefox says they are Vista ready.

The kick ass new search feature, the new BitLocker Encryption using the TPM chip, the 3-D desktop display, and the whole new Aero look and feel is really easy on the eyes. For the 85% of the computer world it is a great upgrade. Especially when SP1 is released and all other programs write Vista friendly releases of their products. Then it will be really nice. Not to mention the new Office 2007!

But then again, I’ve done more than just read reviews….I’ve been testing and playing with all of their beta releases up to the current final release, for the last year or so.

which is exactly the opposite of how it should be ...
Vista should be able to handle applications no matter what... nothing ever had to be XP-ready or 98-ready.....!!!

I actually think it's a big fluke, they have released an OS that is still faaaar from finished.
And if all apps need to be "vista-ready" we could all just start using MAC or Linux... which are slightly more stable platforms

Well, so far my point of view. :D

    *edit*
Not to mention the GiGaNtIc amount of system resources it requires !!! :o

i not too struck on vista at the moement, but i think that i will probably take it up in a few months when i see a service pack.

i might consider it when the direct x 10 cards come out as i develop games, but to be honest it isnt that stable with some nvidia cards at the moment, so im gonna wait a few months.

im still loving my Linux with Compiz/beyrl setup at the moment to care (its so bloody stable)(note this isnt my pc) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUSn-jBA3CE

unfotunately i still have to run XP due to visual studio and my XDK

When the platform changes and updates....the rest of the software has to be re-written. And you better beleive it happened with XP. Going from FAT32 to NTFS was huge programming change to most all softwares and they all had to be re-written. As security enhancement evolve, software has to keep up with the OS. So instead of dreaming of how it "should be" in your mind....join us in the world that actually is.

I also love how you pretentious Mac or Linux users all have formed your opinions on reading what others have half-assedly written about it in a Linx or Mac magazine...without ever seeing or touching it yourselves. You people are funny.....thinking all software has been written the same way since 1998....hahahahahaha...I busted a gut on that one. :D

Exactly what I had to say...

XP has a little something called 'compatibility mode' which you can change to prior versions of the OS, so (almost) anything written before XP runs on it.

Vista on the other hand crashes on you for wanting to install a decent virus scanner.

I'm not saying Linux or Mac are flawless, but based on my exp. a decently set-up linux platform runs a lot smoother and is much more lightweight than a windows OS

But if you have to run a program in compatibility mode....then there are things about the software that need to be updated to be Vista ready...right? That's is all I am saying. You were 100% wrong when you said that software shouldn't need to be updated. It was all updated to be XP compatible and it is all being written to be Visa compatible. Also, no need to be snide as though I have never heard of "compatibility mode." That alone confirms what I already said and goes against what you said if you have to run an old program in compatibility mode. It means the OS has changed and the software writers have work to do.

Also, if you install a Vista capable anti-virus like Symantec 10.2....then it doesn't crash at all.

I love how all these outside companies were not ready with Vista ready software...and yet you blame Microsoft. Tell me, what did you want them to do...drive around to all the other companies dev departments and re-write their software for them? Microsoft has been forthright with their changes and it is up to all the other companies to be prepared. That is the exact reason why we are waiting a year before we move towards Vista in my company....we are waiting for everyone else to catch up with Vista.

Yeah, I have read a lot about it and for the most part, people are saying that it runs pretty well...but there are still a few glitches. And I know the development team at Firefox is working diligently with Microsoft to get all the bugs worked out for Vista. I'll wait for that release of Firefox before switching back.

I only have Vista installed on my laptop. Every other computer tower in my house and at work still is using XP win32.

I was never looking for answers to any problem here. I was just simply telling people what I was doing...being pretty happy about it being it is the future. But then I feel as though i got attacked by pretentious Mac and Linux users...telling me how shit Microsoft's products are, and how no software should have to be re-written for a new OS....all based off of articles you've all read.

    *shakes head*

    Oh well.

You shouldn't take it like that ... :o

I think it's okay that you like it...
I was just trying provide some argumentation man... no need to start bashing linux users here... I still use XP you know.

Anyways, I'm going to bed now.

Peace and love and Pearl Jam
And have fun with your new laptop ;):D

yeah im sorry if you took it like that, to be honest if you got a new pc with vista installed and office, its pretty sweet and you shouldnt have any problems with backwards compatability at all.

a lot of the office and media players work on it, i think firefox 2 is pretty stable on it

a lot of ms products arn't shitty (well i do like visual studio '05), but its just a bit annoying when their focusing on making more money developing new software versions that focus more on features rather then plugging security holes

just at the moment, well i just didnt like the idea of upgrading from XP to vista knowing that when install the home upgrade, my xp key will be rendered useless and i could'nt go back if i had a problem with a piece of hardware

i'll probably get vista within the next year

I've got the exact same setup. I had RC1 on an HP6220, and then Vista Business, but the 6220 didn't have the hardware to fully support all of the Vista features! With Enterprise on the 6400 it's wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you using office 2007 too?

AND actually, I am using Firefox as my default browser. Works wonderfully so far.

Lots of Vista dislikers here eh?

I love it so far. Been using it since sometime last year and I only crashed once, in the beginning.

McAfee is pretty decent, but I prefer its russian counterpart, Kaspersky.

But I do believe IT people should be working with Vista now too, because of the fact they won't be able to answer any probs or devellop soft.

You mean like NT 4.0, right? Because, Win2K, WinXP, and WinVista are all NT based.

Solution to all Mac VS PC problems....

Build your own comp with a RAID set up with at least 300GB (if any higher make sure that the number is divisible by 3) and partition it evenly with WinXP Pro, WinVista x64, and OSx86.

I'm not going to go in to the technical details of building custom pc , but I'd be glad to send you the specs of my system and give you a couple of links on how to do it.

P.S. : This is a shared account between about 15, 16 people so make sure you put To : Austin at the top of the message. ;)

Well, yeah people hate Vista because it screws up their RAM by leaving programs in there after it closes causing a comp with 2GB of RAM occasionally to behave like a computer with 512MB of RAM.

I guess since it's a necessity for work that I reboot pretty often, I don't experience this. And I am seriously amazed that my PC only crashed once, and that was with RC1. I keep installing things on it and it's still going strong. Of course tomorrow it'll crash since I posted this....
