Monitor Problems

Every once in a while my monitor kinda 'shrinks up' my screen. It goes from a full screen to a sort of compressed vertical line. I'm not sure what could be causing it. There are no magnets near it. I have a surge protector behind it with the computer wires and monitor plug into it. I also have my PDA near by with the battery pack plugged into the surge protector. The monitor is about 5 or 6 years old. Anyone have any advice as to why it could be doing this? Thanks.
