Owned DVD to ipod--is it legal, and if so...

I own a PJ DVDs that I would like to view on my ipod. Is it legal to convert them, and if so, is there a reliable way to do this? Is there a free way to do this? I have tried a DVD decrypter followed by a DVD converter (Videora), but the result is that I get good video and hissing audio.
Can I use Quicktime to do this?

it is legal to copy your dvd's for backup purposes and converting them to ipod format falls under that also....

i just d/l'ed handbrake the other day and my attempt resulted with good video and band audio but there are a lot of setting to fool around with so i'm gonna stick with it for now....:)

yikes... need more help.
If I use the dcrypter, it breaks the DVD up into 7 or 8 individual files, even though I have checked the box that says not to split it up. Is there a dvd dcrypter that you recommend??

I use dvd decrypter to convert it to a VOB file, then Videora Ipod converter to convert it to mp4.

look up dvdfab platinum. it does the works !! & easy to use
you will have to pay for the program though !!
