Compressing a file

I was using AVI the whole time and the files I had were huge which of these would be a better option to format?

MPEG-1
MPEG-2
Nero Digital (TM)
Nero Digital (TM)AVC
AVC


Likewise for the profile?

    What about using the app Auto Gordian Knot 2.45?
    You can compress all kinds of video to any xvid, avi file at any size you want.
    It's an amazing app. And it's freeware! :)
