Itunes won't recognize ipod

And now it says that I must restore the ipod to use in this computer. I don't have a backup and I don't wanna erase everything on my ipod. I looked for other softwares to manage the ipod and tried the winamp plug-in, but I have to format the ipod to use that, which will erase everything too. What should I do? Thanks.

    i should have called apple for assistance
    i eventually just had to reformat
    it sucks!!!

    ok, thanks for the input. thankfully I found a software that makes a backup for the ipod
