I bought a 250 GB external harddrive on Black Friday at Best Buy for only $99, and I find it very cool that I can copy all my files (documents, pictures, videos and music...especially music...all 10,900 of my songs from iTunes (my iPod)) onto this so I won't lose anything in case my computer crashes. The brand name is Seagate FreeAgent. Does anyone else use this brand, and is it a good brand to use?

I don't have an external yet but am thinking about it; a while ago I asked a friend who is fairly knowledgable about recommending an external hard drive and the first thing out of his mouth was Seagate for reliability and ease of use; another friend immediately echoed it.

    I like Western Digital myself
I just don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die.

I've been using Western Digital HD's since '98. Not once have had any problems. I trust my life with them. And if you know what I do, take it from experience. A b+p'ing/trading/torrenting junkie. :P

I love the Western Digital My Book 500 Gig's External HD's. Now the 1tbs are out. Don't have one yet. You know that will be one of my '08 treat. :)
  • Honestly, I'd just get the cheapest one you can find that hasn't had lots of negative reports. Hard drives are mostly luck and superstition, seriously. I've had all kinds...it just so happens that I've never had a Maxtor crap out on me. Every Western Digital I've owned has had problems. But as you can see, other people have had no probs with em. It's mostly luck imo.

I seen a sweet 300 gig HP Persoanl Media Drive for just $99 bucks at Staples. Was so tempted to buy one. But I have my eye's set on the 1TB Western Digital. Which HD was it now that makes the loudest sounds? I had a Seagate one, and I didn't like it at all. Coping & pasting .. was insanity.

And for sure, many will work for some users .. many will not. It alway's happens .. in this tech world we live in.
