Router Help Please

QuarterToTenQuarterToTen Posts: 3,636
I have a Linkysys wireless router. For the past month I have had issues with
the computer freezing up, being kicked off the internet.

Now one of the connections won't work at all. I have tried every configuration possible.

The router is only a couple of months old and I have bought new cables, reset the router all to no avail.

Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and would appreciate any help.

I am pretty much computer illiterate, so be kind. Thanks in advance.
Nice shirt.

Strange problem but it doesn't sound like the router's the problem. If your using Win XP you might have the firewall on. Try this.

To turn Windows Firewall on or off
You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure.

    Open Windows Firewall.
On the General tab, click one of the following:
On (recommended). This is the setting that you should normally use.

You can also select the Don't allow exceptions check box. When this check box is selected, the firewall blocks all unsolicited requests to connect to your computer, including requests to programs or services selected on the Exceptions tab. Use this setting when you need maximum protection for your computer, such as when you connect to a public network in a hotel or airport, or when a dangerous virus or worm is spreading over the Internet.

Off (not recommended). Turning off Windows Firewall might make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from viruses or unknown intruders.

This may not solve the problem but this is all I can think of now. There are other here that have more knowledge that hopefully can help you.

I just assumed it was the router because I hadn't had this problem before.

I appreciate the information, and will definitely try it. Its just so frustrating that I don't know more about computers to help fix the problem.

Thanks again. At this point I am willing to try anything.
    I'm open for suggestions.

Have you tried running scans for spyware? Your problem doesnt sound like a router problem - if you've deleted temp internet files and cookies, then def scan for spyware. Ad-Aware and Spybot are the best i've used

Make sure there is not an ip conlfict and have DHCP set up correctly. to do this yo have to log into the routers UI usually by typing in 192.168.0.1 (default login : admin, password : (blank or admin)) I work with dlink or big cisco routers so i don't know how to work linsys but check their site for support,
  • Also make sure the Linksys router's firmware is up to date.
    Go here..
    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859841396&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

I had the same problem. I updated my firmware and it fixed it.
    Good luck.
