I keep trying to and it gets to about 10% then says the drive's contents have changed and it restarts. Any idea what's wrong with this thing?

Probably programs running in the backround. You should defrag in Safe Mode.
To start the computer in safe mode
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8. (you may not have this option - hit F8 as soon as your computer starts booting)
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

Hey, that totally worked, thank you so much. No one has ever told me to do that in safe mode before. I'll do that from now on. Thanks again!

I tried in safe mode and it still restarts at 10%. Any suggestions or is my computer just toast?

You shouldn't normally have to do anything in safe mode, unless it's not working in "regular mode."

    PC:
    Virus scan, ad-ware scan, etc.

If you don't have that software, check out http://www.free-av.com, http://www.spybot.info, and http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,

Download, update the files through each program, and run.

    Then retry the defrag.
