Does anyone own one of these? I was just wondering if people like it and if it's worth the money.

I don't have one and don't think I would like it because I prefer to read from paper/books rather than from a screen.

But one of my co-workers has one and she's OBSESSED. You'd think it was her child or something as much as she loves that thing.

That's how I feel, I don't like reading off a screen but it said it looks like paper. People rave about it. I went on Amazon and read about it but it's an investment.

I really don't get how this device would benefit me. It costs $400 and you still have to pay full price for books it downloads. The library seems like a more logical choice.

The books are cheaper actually. I don't know, Im thinkiing it will cut down on the books i have around my house but it's expensive. You can get $50 off if you go on oprah winfrey's site and get a discount code.

  • There are some good benefits like being able to get a book on a whim, or getting your magazine and newspaper subscriptions delivered to you no matter where you are.

I've been considering one for my wife as a gift this holiday season...just trying to figure out if it's worth it. She thinks it's cool, but is somewhat indifferent to it.

I would suggest trying to check one out in person in your town if that's at all possible. There may be an option for that if you look on Amazon's site.

I had one and didn't really like it and sold it on eBay a few weeks ago. I feel like they need to refine the design of it a bit before I'd consider trying it again. Too many buttons to unintentionally bump that set off a unwanted navigation or turn of the page. I read a total of three books on the thing and never liked it. The screen was nice but the buttons were clunky. I like books for simply guaging progress by flipping pages...harder to get that feel on a wireless reader. Also subscribed for a month to Wall Street Journal. Definately saved some money over paper delivery service, but again, I never felt as if I was reading everything I could. Not having pictures wasn't a big deal, though.

I travel a lot for work so I thought this device would be handy. Bottom line, I prefer to simply take a book along as opposed to this additional electronic device with one more power cord.

Just my opinion -- I am not a frequent reader of books -- six or seven books a year -- like I am magazines or newspapers. I will try one again from Amazon when the design/ergonomics are refined and improved. They are def the right company to offer the harware/software/service!

Is it "Kindle" as in "kindling," as in what they hope books will become? God knows I hate moving with them, but I'll never be able to give up my books.

so ARE the book downloads cheaper or not?

wonder if colleges will ever use them? They’d bring down tuition cost maybe.

My mom is a little obsessed with this thing, though she hasn't bought one. yet. when i was talking to her over the weekend, she said the plan was to give/sell these to college students in order to cut down on the ridiculous textbook prices. she also said books are something like $9.99 to download, kinda like an album on itunes. Keep in mind i'm just parroting her. All of the above could be wrong and i wouldn't have a clue.

Yeah, I was thinking of trying to find out if someone i knew had one and kind of checking it out. I did hear about the navigational buttons being a problem.
    Thanks, this is helpful.

They appear to be cheaper. I went on amazon and checked out the kindle books and I saw this hardcover books for 8.99. That's not bad at all. Well yeah it would be good for a college student I think. Im not sure if they have text books for them. I guess you can look on Amazon.

  • I had never even heard of it until this thread. But I just watched a video of it on amazon.com and it looks pretty cool. But a lot of times I have to flip to a previous section of a book to either freshen up on something that was mentioned and is now being discussed in more detail, or simply because I missed something that was a key detail. That could be a problem.

I don't know that thing seems spiffy..I'm sure they must have some feature that you can go to a previous section.

yeah, I was talking to a friend recently and she said she wished she had one in college. The only thing Im wary of is the hefty price.

My wife's friend has one. She takes the train into work every day and uses it to read on the train. My wife said all books that are over 50 years old are free so her friend has been reading a lot of the classics. I read a review of it in Entertainment Weekly that was interesting.

It doesn't interest me for a lot of the same reasons a lot of people have said about liking reading books. Who knows though, I didn't think I would get an ipod and now it is my favorite thing I own.

  • fuck that, i'll never get tired of reading from a real book. not to mention going back and re-reading an old book and getting that first whiff of old book smell. can't get the same thing from a screen.

huh, I didn't know that, free books that's awesome. Well another thing I like is that you can bump up the font, Im visually impaired and it's a bitch reading paperbacks. Well tomorrow is the last day to get the oprah discount so I think Im just gonna go buy it. I guess i can return it if I don't like it.
