I remember babysitting this kid next door to my parents house. He had a Michael Jordan Rookie Card, I tore it up because Clyde Drexler was cooler :D

He's probably pissed about that now :)

I used to collect when I was a kid. My best is a 1948 Leaf Ted Williams that is sitting in a safety deposit box. Among others also in that box but that's my very best. It was used as a bookmarker by my grandfather. lol He did that with many cards and its cool cause they are all mint. Someday they will be a down payment on a house. :)

cool thread. :) i used to collect a lot when i was a kid. when i think of how many good cards i gave away or damaged before i knew what they were worth...damn! i still have some at my sister's house, mostly pretty common sets from the late 80's early 90's, but i sold most of my collection to help pay for my first year at university. used to have a couple of gretzky RC's, messier, yzerman, bourque, etc. etc. lots of hockey. had an '89 upper deck complete set with griffey jr. RC back when it was worth a lot more, i think. clemens RC, boggs, strawberry, etc. etc. there were the pro set football sets, too. had about 40 barry sanders RC's, 20-30 aikman RC's...i think score ended up being the more valuable set from that year, though and so the ones i had went down in value quickly.

used to be a lot of fun trading with other kids in the neighbourhood. it was fun trying to complete sets. we just shouldn't have been storing them in shoe boxes and drawing moustaches on the guys we didn't like. :D

those mantle, williams, and other cards are very cool. i never owned anything that far back, unfortunately. you're all fortunate to have them.

anyone remember the '89 fleer billy ripken "rick face" frenzy? :D

you mean the Topps USA baseball card? I've got like 10 of them ... ha ha.

I collected a ton between 1982 and 1987 ... glad to say I never paid more than $15 for any card .... maybe a touch more than that for some of the late 60s early 70s cards.

At one point I traded all my football cards to my friend for all his baseball card, but I kept my Walter Peyton rookie card (which I paid $4 for).

Of course, my favoite cards have Jim Rice on them!

I collected packs in 81-84, and every few years, I go back and look at them. Some interesting ones, but I am not sure if there are any expensive rookie cards in there. I believe I may have Ricky Henderson. I have to go back and check.

I do have a ball that was signed by Ernie Banks, Reggie Jackson, Sadaharu Oh, Lou Brock, and a bunch of other guys. I got it at an old timers game.

The first year Pro Set Football cards were awful too....I remember buying two boxes....and they were identical card for card. :(

the pro set fb were not even all cut right! lol

same here collected everything from the mid-early 80's until they killed the market mid 90's
I cant even remember what exactly I have but I took it all and left it at my house in Greece, Bout 3 of those 1000 count boxes all with Leetch Richter, Messier rookies, Forsbergs, etc..you name it Sakic OPC and Topps Bowman UD, FLEER, Donruss. Not to mention one of those boxes is full of nothing but autographs from just about every nhl player in that span on pucks, calendars, photos, cards and even Beckett magazine covers.
I wonder what its all worth now

:D indeed. nice gag by his teammates! i was only ever able to find a "scribbles" one, but i think the "black box" card became the one that was worth the most. i can't remember exactly, it's been a while. i just remember they put a bunch of corrections out there and there was all kinds of speculation about which one would end up being the most rare.

sounds like most of you who have posted have some amazing stuff! :) makes me want to get back into collecting again!

another thing i have to do with hockey that is pretty cool is:

Game 6 1994 Stanley Cup Finals Score Sheet
    Vancouver Vs. New York
And Game 6 Program Auto'd by Pat Quinn.

i have countless cards, but its true the market was killed in the 90's. ive been told that you should just take the main players and RC's out of those sets and keep them, all the commons are pretty much recycling material. that bad. its too bad. they were just SOOOO mass produced.

I collected for a couple of years back in the late 80s. Don't think I've touched them in 10 years. My prize WAS a Roberto Clemente card. Can't remember the year, but either way, some asshat neighborhood kid I knew stole it from me.

I have a bunch of autographed nba cards from 1989-1991. I used to mail them away to the teams and some signed and others didn't and sent me postcards and bumper stickers. My favorite aspect was when I sent a Ricky Pierce card to the bucks and got it back with a notice that said "we are unable to accomadate your request because pierce has been traded"

Collected baseball cards for a long time and I still do buy them from time to time. Never collected for value's sake, mostly just the thrill of opening packs and getting to know the players via a picture and statistics. I'm a big Tom Glavine guy so started collecting his cards as a kid and now have over 500. I'm embarassed and proud simultaneously. I must say though organizing baseball cards while listening to music (esp PJ) is great stress relief.

My cousin had a signed Don Mattlingly rookie that I was always envious of. He also had a Sandy Koufax of some year that I forget. I don't believe it was a rookie card. I'm not sure if he still has those cards.

Personally, I've always believed that if Tony Gwynn was white, his cards would've been worth a lot more.

    oh shit! lol
thats another thing I did for a few yrs..write to every team and tell them which players I was a fan of and I got back MAD collectibles
A chicago al star keychain puck from lik 91 (?) I believe
St. Louis rookie cards of Brinda mour, Joseph and someone else (promos)
Modano, Hatcher, Roenick, all promo stuff Iguess from the arena or promo giveaway nights
Also wrote to the NHL and got a signed letter from Bettman in like 93 along with some official 91-92, etc schedules.
I would say that stuff is some of my prized stuff..dont think you can get any of that anymore.

Makes me want to be a kid again and start writing to teams just to wait for my mailman everyday with excitement. Oh, kept all the envelopes too with some Winnipeg Jets, Nordiques stamps on the outside ;)
