Turntables - What do I need to know?

I've been interested in possibly getting a turntable of some sort, so I can get a few vinyls and see if the sound is really so much more amazing than a CD.
So, as a newbie, it begs the question: What do I need to know so I can make a well-informed decision on buying one?

high surround sound system isn't going to do much for you in terms of sound quality since normal cd's and vinyl are in stereo. What matters as far as sound quality goes is the type of cartridge/stylus/needle being used and the turntable's drive system.
The reason I buy vinyl is because it is the only form of music that is still an investment. Also there's kitsch and nostalgia that goes with listening to it. The act of going to a record store looking through different records, then going home and actually listening to music as an activity.
An analogy would be that buying and listening to vinyl is like Christmas with cookies, family all around, a christmas tree, gift giving, christmas lights on your house, a filled stocking over the lit fireplace, christmas music in the background (that hasn't been played over and over again).
Downloading music on mp3 is like getting nothing but a VISA cash gift card in the mail that your whole family went in on purchasing.

I Do!
Please go and find one at the local thrift store first if your not sure about purchasing one!
I am wondering does this thread make anyone feel REALLY old? I love vinyl!
Albums are a lost art... :(
Anyone remember piling up a shitload of RECORDS and playing them all night? or Finding lost mary jane inside a folder album cover? or How about things like the Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" album where you could unzip the zipper... Album Covers were shit way back when!
I miss them and still say lets go to the record store!
I love my records.......I love binaural on vinyl......
