Didn't see a thread yet for this, so I thought I would start one up. Such an accomplishment, especially for a second basemen. Rookie of the Year, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, AL MVP. Great resume for only two years of service!

Except that Howard has no shot in hell of ever winning a gold glove unless the other national league team's use cardboard cut outs at first base. ;)

  • It's so crazy that this guy who in May of last year was playing his way back to Pawtucket is now the AL MVP, nuts.

what a joke...wins a rookie of the year when Braun, Pence, and Tulo are in the other league...wins a gold glove bc his range is about that of omar vizquels' circa 2008...wins mvp b/c he's not manny ramirez. oh well, at least ryan howard didn't take it down.

I know you have a favorable opinion about the Red Sox.

But it's Pedroia's fault he was the best rookie in his league?

And considering the panel at the fielding bible had Pedroia as the 2nd best fielding 2nd baseman in the AL last year, I wouldn't be so quick to rip Pedoira's fielding.

I think the panel probably watches more baseball than all of us on the board combined so I respect their opinion.

    http://www.billjamesonline.net/fieldingbible/the-panel.asp

As for MVP, it would have been Quentin's but he hurt hurt himself and missed the last month of the season. There were no real viable candidates this year.
So Pedroia won for doing this the last two months of the year in a playoff race:

    .353/.410/.585

Morneau during the same period: .263/.335/.437

Mauer during the same period: .344/.413/.453

Youklis during the same period: .319/.415/.626

Hamilton during the same period: .301/.386/.485

So if you want to argue that Youklis should have been MVP I can see your point, but to say Pedroia wasn't a worthy candidate is foolish.

first of all...yes Solat I like tweaking Sawx fans, and yes Pedroia was really good this year (maybe even MVP good which is a lot coming from me) BUT really did this just get said. Would I rather have Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, or Hunter Pence over Dustin Pedroia?

Fair disclosure I am a Brewers fan, but seriously Pedroia over Braun? Braun carried the Brewers on offense this year until he tweaked his back in late August (they immediately sucked), and until Prince and he got it going at the end of September the team struggled. Still, this year Braun led the NL in extra base hits. Either way as a rookie (which was my argument) he hit 34 HRs in like 113 games, hit like .450 against LHP, and had a .631 slugging percentage, but struggled in the field. So they sent him to left his year where he made 0 errors and reigned in his wild arm with 9 Assists, and became the team's leader in the clubhouse. In other words, if you want Pedroia over Braun I think you smoke crack.

Troy Tulowitzki as a rookie was DIRTY, he was a nasty shortstop who hit a ton. Not only that but he did it with Matt Holliday as his main protection. His tear during the Rox ridiculous run helped carry the team to the playoffs. I may be wrong but the Sox probably would have made the playoffs last year with a marginal second basemen...the Rockies don't without Tulo. Yes Tulo was injured this year, but again if you want Pedroia over Tulo I think you smoke pot.

Hunter Pence, as a rookie, was, at one point, better than both Tulo and Braun, but then he got banged up a bit. As a rookie in the AL he probably still wins the rookie of the year in '07. This year he struggled out of the gate and tore it up with and without Berkman and Lee in the lineup. Not only that but he has a laser...rocket...arm that he brings to the outfield, and good speed to cut things off. If you want Pedroia over Pence I think you probably drink too much and talk with a Boston accent, but that is about the only player of the three the could even be close to a "reach" if I want them over Pedroia.

Unfortunately for me, Pedroia is always going to be better than I give him credit for because he represents everything that I hate about players that the fans of the Red Sox love (arrogant white guy, who is extremely talented, but that gets dismissed and repositioned as his 'hard work'), and he is always going to be worse that Red Sox fans think he is (mostly because Sawx fan's blindly love their white guys and muted minorities like David Ortiz). So, as with Derek Jeter, arguments over his "greatness" will end in perpetual fighting with good points being handed out on both sides...maybe Pedroia is kinda the new Jeter?!?!

Completely agree with all of this. Carlos Quentin would've won it walking away had he not broken his wrist. The guy missed the entire month of September and was still only 1 behind Miggy Cabrera for the home run crown. And yes, homers aren't everything. But .288/.394/.571 through 130 games ain't to shabby either. The most telling stat is that he led the league with the most go-ahead RBIs at the time of his injury. He carried a team picked to finish 3rd at best in their division to being in position to win it in Sept. Ah, makes me kinda sad thinking about what could've been.

Pedroia was definitely a worthy candidate. Your stats say a lot about his clutch hitting down the stretch. He also carried his team, but they were also picked to win the division at the very least. The team he plays for right now will certainly never hurt his chances for awards and all-star votes.

Mauer and Morneau took votes away from each other as both had outstanding years. But they were a little quiet, especially Morneau, down the stretch.

Still hard for me to think about K-Rod breaking the single-season saves record and only receiving 1 first place vote in the cy young and mvp voting combined.
He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share, his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere.

So what you are saying is that, in the end, Pedroia won something again b/c everyone else sucked. ;)
  • and only in his second year.
