I am a sox fan born and raised, but there are definitely things about the team that bug me. First, Manny was a problem so the veterans on the team voted him off the team. Now, Ortiz is complaining about not having protection. Maybe he needs to adapt and prove that he is the hitter he has been the past few seasons. I love the guy but come on!

  • he has every damn right to complain about not having protection! he had youkilis. and i know he's a great hitter, but pitchers aren't afraid of him like they were with manny. he needs protection which is why i hope the sox pick up tex.
I will be what i could be

Ha ha, I agree with the texiera pickup, would be great. Lets face it though, there are few like Manny. Texiera is about it thats available. You have Pedroia, Youk, Bay, etc. It could be a lot worse for him. I love Ortiz but he has been spoiled. Hopefully he comes back healthy next season and shuts me up :). I think the true test for him will be to be able to perform at a high level without someone like a "manny" behind him. Dont' get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan, but it drives me nuts when these guys complain when they are already on a pretty stacked team.

Maybe if he could hit real pitching he wouldn't be complaining.

Maybe since he's been on the Red Sox with protection. With his comment, he's basically saying he can't hit well unless there's someone else good behind him.

I think the original poster is reading a little roo much into Ortiz's comments. Ortiz isn't asking for protection but for another bat in the lineup.

When the Sox were in the playoffs last year after Lowell got hurt, the Sox wound up starting a firstbaseman (Kotsay) who had 0 home runs in his two months in Boston. The Sox were basically playing with a 6 man lineup.

    Ortiz's exact quote was:

Ortiz said about needing more pop in the Sox lineup, "I think so, especially in our division the pitching is improving a lot. And next year, let me tell you, you're going to have to face a lot of good pitching. The Yankees are going to be better, those guys in Tampa have good pitching and you never know what can happen."

He added, "I think we need a few guys in the bullpen and a 30-home run guy and we'll be all set."

The irony of Ortiz's statement is that the Sox actually hit more homers in 2008 than in 2007.

But from Peter Gammon's column back in August:

Why there is so much made of who hits behind whom, when it's who hits in front that counts. Keep your bases-empty stats. The definition of a rally is hitting with someone on base.

David Ortiz can't hit without Manny Ramirez? He has experience doing just that.

In Sept. 2007, Ramirez played in six games, and Ortiz led the majors with a 1.341 OPS for the month. Ramirez batted behind him in one game.

In Sept. 2006, Ramirez again played in six games, Ortiz was second in the American League in OPS at 1.146.

    From Aug. 6, 2006 through Aug. 5, 2008:

    Manny … and No Manny

    With Ramirez

    Games 194
    OPS .987
    ABs per HR 4.2

    Without Ramirez

    Games 64
    OPS 1.082
    ABs per HR 3.5

In his Red Sox career, Ortiz's OPS with Ramirez hitting behind him is 1.000. With anyone else, it's .998 up until the trade. Playing with one wrist, Ortiz managed an OPS of .900. So we'll see how he does next year when healthy.

  • Don't discount the fact that he was never fully right after the wrist injury this year, especially considering the ammount of torque he puts on it everytime he swings. Yes, he could use some help hitting aroudn him, but I don't think he's dropped as much as people say he has, until I see him healthy.
