Navy identifies sailor killed pushing car out of road

NORFOLK

A 27-year-old Navy sailor killed early Friday after he was struck by a car has been identified.

According to police, Jason M. Dungee's car ran out of gas in the 200 block of S. Military Highway about 2:30 a.m. He and two friends were pushing the car, and Dungee was standing on the driver's side near the back when another vehicle driving in that lane hit him. He died later in a hospital.

According to the Navy, Dungee was an aviation ordnancemen third class, and was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 106 at the Oceana Naval Air Station. Dungee, a native of Baltimore, enlisted in the Navy in 2002 and had served for four and a half years aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

Police said it does not appear that the driver who hit Dungee will face charges. Speed and alcohol were not factors, police said. The incident remains under investigation.

Dungee is survived by a wife and daughter.

Thought I would post this just for discussion. All of us at VFA-106 are pretty upset that the guy who killed Dungee isn't being charged with ANYTHING.

RIP AO3 Dungee

Terrible news. Sorry to hear it.

Could you clarify why the driver should be charged? Was he negligent? Drunk? Speeding?

The article doesn't specify that he did anything out of the ordinary. Obviously he should have swerved or hit the brakes, etc. Was the road winding and his vision impaired?

    Thanks,

    Nate
  • Speeding, Alcohol, nor Drugs were a factor....how can you just amazingly run off the road and hit four people pushing a car on the side of the road...swirve over four lanes of traffic that is...I don't know, I guess it's just a shock factor. Involuntary manslaughter?
