Stayed over (to satisfy OP's criteria) (28):
Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
Ohio, Oregon, PA, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin
I consider myself to have been to the following states, officially, even if I didn't technically stay overnight there. If you have a problem with that, you can shove it. I'll give my justification for each. Looks like there are 5, so that makes 33 official visited states.
Alabama (went to client meeting at Auburn Univ)
Indiana (lots of drive-throughs, meals, traffic jams, got lost in Gary )
Iowa (visited Field of Dreams)
Michigan (went to game at Tiger Stadium, went into MIchigan Stadium, drove overnight to get there)
Wyoming (went to Cheyenne Frontier Days, bought a t-shirt that I wore for about 6 years until it frayed)
Here are some states I've been in, but would have to not classify having "visited."
Drive thrus:
Kentucky (crossed a bridge from Cincinnati, then drove right back over another bridge)
Nebraska (I did get a shot glass at a gas station)
Rhode Island
Tennessee (just airports, I know that doesn't count)
West Virginia (just the panhandle)

That's 17, although I think I should be able to count 2 more as well. On the Rhode Island trip, we took a day and went to Boston to do all the historical/touristy things. On the Nevada trip, we did the same thing with Death Valley in California. We didn't spend the night, but it also wasn't just a drive through.
19 plus DC. missing all of the Midwest entirely. Have stayed numerous times in every state in the NE except for Maine, which is definitely on my list.....a few in the South and a few out West and also Alaska. I honestly have no need or desire to hit up all 50. I far rather travel internationally than make a trip to certain states, but that's me. though I definitely want to hit up more, maybe bring my tally up to say 25-30.

45: need Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, and fucking Nebraska. I'm gonna get Idaho and Oregon next year (maybe not stay overnight, but do something significant in each like golf at the University of Idaho Golf Course and spend the day at a microbrewery or two in Portland).

I have been to 32. Missing the Missippi Delta and ND to OK zone.
Qualification for been to means you have slept somewhere in the borders of that state overnight.
No Drive throughs.
Based on these qualifications: New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, Florida.

The Southern United States rule. I especially love Alabama. There is some beautiful country to be seen down there, and in the fall it's just that much better.

I'm going to argue this qualification. I've spent nights in states for work where I've only seen the airport, hotel & office, and never saw/experienced anywhere near as much as I have on some states I've driven through.

The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
