Trip to Pacific Northwest

Hey all, I am taking a trip to meet up with friends in Corvallis, OR about an hour from Portland. I'm thinking of extending my trip and looking around more, maybe making my way to Seattle and flying out from there. I was thinking of camping at mt. rainier national park. Any suggestions regarding that or other activities? I've been to Seattle once before (incidentally to see pearl jam) but I was only there for a couple days and didn't see all that much.

That'll be a fun road trip :) lots of activities - but you'd have to bring them with you or rent them! like kayaking, biking, boating, or come prepared for hiking, camping, etc.

You may want to stop by Mt St Helens on your way up. Also, even though it's way out of the way, I suggest you drive up 101. It's a rambling highway along the coast, lots of small towns along the way, beautiful! Mt Rainier has some nice camping areas, but you could run into full lodging during the summer. Do check on the parks websites for entrance fees, closures, etc.

    Have fun!

thanks. maybe I'll driving up 101 if I end up doing this myself (I'm not sure if my friend can come with me yet).

I hope you don't mind me jumping on board here. I'm going to Portland/Seattle and probably either Mt. Ranier or Vancouver, BC in August myself. Any suggestions for non-traditional family friendly type stuff? I'll be going with my wife and 2-year old son. Any cool downtown hotel recommendations in Portland and Seattle? Something not overly pricey and not a chain would be preferable.

    When?

Rainier is still pretty snowy right now. There's still 10 feet of snow at Paradise! The campgrounds should be fine, but most of the hiking trails are covered in snow.
