I'm heading to Amsterdam on Monday for five days. Any suggestions on places to see or things that I should do. Excluding hiring a prostitute thanks. lol What museums/food/drink establishments would you recommend? Thanks in advance for useful ideas

Van Gogh museum is a must, as is the Anne Frank House...if you like politics, the Hague is an interesting building...and don't forget to check out their canal shopping area...
obviously there are cannabis cafes and the like - but dont be a total doof when in Amsterdam...just like when you go to the red light district (it's historic, and being on the street does not mean you are going to be having sex) maintain a level of respect. You will notice that most of the inhabitants of this great city are incredibly tolerant...I like to caution people to adapt the "locals" stance on behavior.
Heineken has a museum too. Also there is a museum to BDSM, and one that has tattoo'd skin.

I'm never as good as when you're there.........
If I had to remember it, I'd have to say it was all really great...

I apologize - I should not have been so "caution-y" it's just that the time I spent in Amsterdam was slightly ruined by other tourists making complete asses of themselves...EVERY single place I went...it was really embarrassing.
I am sure you don't need some stranger to scoff at your international behavior.
not quite sure
I appreciate the advice. Yea, wasn't planning on going stark raving crazy. I'll be with a group for a couple days, but by myself for three.
Cheers!
Ohh thats a long time in Amsterdam. Alot can happen. lol
Ann Frank house
Heineken brewery tour
Van Gogh museum
For smoking try the Grey zone or Rookies. Both are very cool places. Very friendly people work at both place and can help you out if you have questions.
Thanks for the advice.

I really loved it.
I always tell people to go down to the train station and rent a bicycle and peddle out into the tulip fields. It is so beautiful.
Down by where the Anne Frank Haus is, there is a frites stand that has a mock painting of the Potato Eaters on the outside. They are eating frites, not potatoes as Van Gogh depicted. lol
And the AIDS memorial is around there somewhere.
Go to the cinema if you want to stay out of trouble at night. It is fun to watch outdated American movies with subtitles.
And the Van Gogh museum (I haven't been to the new one) and the Rijks Museum are so awesome.
There is so much more than spacecakes and prostitutes.
Oh and the sex museum is amusing.
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

Definately! I remember being totally blown away by the Red Light District (I'm a girl). It made me sad in a way. But it is definately an experience. Just to walk through. You'll never see anything like it.
I also remember being sad at how "commercialized" the Anne Frank Haus was. I know I should have expected that but it still made me sad. But it's super cool. As is the Van Gogh Museum. Rent a bike. There is no such thing as a "Royale With Cheese" FYI! The Netherlands are beautiful, I couldn't believe how much it looked like a postcard with the windmills and tulips.
Be cautious and very respectful as you would anywhere. I saw things there that blew my mind away. Both on the streets and (clearing my throat) the sex museum!
But it's an amazing place. Enjoy!

I see no (?) Dutch people have responded yet, so let me be the first Amsterdam is pretty nice, and of course there are the usual touristy places to go to. Pity you couldn't have come here around the 30th of April, because you would step into a wild day of celebration then (Queen's day, where we celebrate the (former) queen's birthday - everything is orange then).
The red light district is quickly declining, now the city council is making rules to replace the working girls with fashion designers.
The "Dam" is nice, just to hang out and see the palace plus the war monument. It could be a good starting point of a day's trip, followed by a walk through the "Kalverstraat" - which is actually a lot of shops, but it could be fun.
To take in as much as you can from The Netherlands as a whole, I also recommend to visit some places outside of Amsterdam. "Madurodam" (http://www.madurodam.nl/) is in The Hague (south of Amsterdam) and shows the whole of The Netherlands in miniature, good for a day trip and for an idea of what more you would like to see. You could combine that with a visit to Scheveningen beach (also situated in/next to The Hague), but it's rather cold still.
If you would like to see some more tulips, I recommend a trip to the "Keukenhof", which is essentially a park with a lot of gardens (http://www.keukenhof.nl/). Also pretty touristy, but nice.
It is probably going to be fun anyway, but please take in mind that even though Amsterdam is nice, there are bound to be some people who like all foreigners for their money - pickpockets, people offering 'drugs' on the street (don't buy it), robbers. It's good to be a bit streetwise, and don't trust all you see.
Have a great holiday !
Cheers!
bthe way my bf have to work over there for one week what a f...

SMELL YER MA!
I didn't behave like a fratty with a fatty!!!
(duuuude I am sooo wasted!!!- bleck!)
The sex museum was really cool! and I said it before but RENT A BIKE!!!!
I would also suggest going over to liedsplain in the early evening and getting a discount pass for the bar hop. It's an awsome time, you get free killer cool-aid all through the night, and a free drink at every bar you go to (i think it was 6 bars, but i was really messed up and don't remember the last couple lol).
Try going into all the cafe's (just don't wear a hat cause they are not allowed inside the shops), barney's is a really good cafe that has a restaurant joined to it that you can smoke while you eat. It is pretty small so i'd get there early for breakfast.
No matter what you do, you will have a great time. Oh and try some nice white belgium beers, i probably miss them the most.

Out of all the coffee shops, I really was into the Blues Brothers cafe.
Heineken factory was fun, and there is a Hard Rock Cafe in walking distance. Pretty good food.
On another note.. anyone know when the airfare would be cheapest heading over to the Dam? Really trying to go back..

This is all great advice. Also the Reich museum (not about Nazi's) is incredible too. It has a lot of Rembrandt's, and is a pretty cool place.
Also, if you're not in to smoking, Amsterdam is an amazing place even without drugs. I was there and didn't use at all.
That is crazy you say that. I was at the Park Place hotel and Blues brothers was the coffee shop I was at most of the times I wanted a smoke. The lady at the bar was really nice and the silver haze was some of the best I saw there surprisingly.
I know this thread doesn't seem to hyped up about that side of Amsterdam but I was happy to see someone say they liked that place too.
I liked the chinese place too called Wok the Walk....ate it everyday.
Not to be Debbie Downer but the Heineken Brewery I believe is closed until 2009, we tried to stop there.
There is a pretty cool improv/comedy club thing called Boom Chicago, if you're into that type of thing. Not that it really matters at all but everyone there is American so you wont have to learn flemish or dutch or whatever it is they all speak to understand!
Ok bye.
I've been to Amsterdam a handful of times and loved it. It is such a beautiful city. I agree that the Anne Frank house is a must see. The first time I went was SO hard for me--I had just been to Auschwitz a couple weeks before and I've read Anne Frank's diary at several stages in my life. But it is definitely a must see.
The Van Gogh museum is one of my favorites! Definitely a must see!
And yes, definitely do a canal tour. One trip I did on the bigger boats with recorded commentary, and it was okay. But the next trip I went on a very small boat--it only held about 6 people and it was such a great experience!
I enjoyed the Heineken Experience as well.
Dutch people are super friendly too. Whether you smoke or not (I'm not much of a smoker) you will have so much fun in Amsterdam! So many things to do and see! I'm jealous!
Its take off thats the most dangerous. Everything else is a breeze..........well maybe a jammed rudder or complete hydraulic failure or the engine shelling out.
You have nothing to worry about.
