read a book and think of Pearl Jam lyrics as expressive of the thoughts and emotions conveyed in the book?

I am currently reading "Shrapnel in the Heart: Letters and Remembrances from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial" by Laura Palmer. The book was written in 1987, yet so many of the stories, poems and remembrances remind me of different PJ songs. Maybe it's because, just like PJ songs, the words are honest and so raw, painful, and open. I spent my 40 minute Metro ride home yesterday and my lunch today crying behind my sunglasses :(

I guess I just can't help substituting Iraq for Vietnam right now and making mental comparisons. Funny how history kinda keeps repeating itself . . .

Are there any other books out there that are like that for you?

I think you could experience that with some Kurt Vonnegut books. It's been a while since I've read any of his fiction (though maybe his more recent nonfiction would be even more likely to have PJ-type sentiments in it since there's a lot of resentment against the war in it), but there's a lot of really clever social commentary in there. PJ's music seems to have a lot of that as well.

And also, of course, the books of Daniel Quinn.

Ha! Twin Peaks was the first thing I thought of when I read that, too.
