Seriously,
try finding a place for two people in the general vicinity of Manhattan from the state of Arkansas. Anyone have any advice? ...and no I won't shave my legs and let you call me pretty, jeez!

Manhattan...isn't that where people pay upwards of $1,000,000 just to have a parking space?

ALL depends on the area, where you are willing to live. there ARe more affordable spots, even within manhattan....just don't know if it is 'desirable' to live there or not. ;p

roommates.... or rent control...or wealthy. :)
or, as i mentioned, they live in the 'less desirable' areas of manhattan and/or boroughs. it IS possible, absolutely. i know quite a few people that i work with who live right in manhattan, and some for crazy good rents. up in harlem, over on the west side, all the way on the east side - mid/downtown. there are spots....it's up to you if you like em, etc.

btw - to the OP, i don't think he'll mind.....shoot mookie9999 a PM. he is a manhattan realtor. i am sure he would'nt mind giving a wee bit of freebie advice on where/what to look for. and sure, if you do want a realtor to assist, i am sure hiring a fellow jammer/boardie would be good too! win-win either way! :)

Shoot. There goes my dream of living in a Friends-style apartment in the middle of Manhattan. :D

    What's "less desirable", though?

I always wondered how they could afford that place. Rachel was a waitress, Monica was a chef and I Phoebe waitressed as well, right? Any speculation on what that place would actually rent for? Wasn't it right across from Central Park too?
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

good luck with NYC. check out places like hoboken and jersey city in new jersey. you are a 4 minute subway ride to manhattan, without the manhattan prices.

no, not by central park. downtown. however, early on they 'covered' that...as in, monica's grandmother used to live there i think? and thus when monica took it over, still under rent-control, thus, cheap. how chandler and joey afforded theirs tho, dunno.

    how sad that i know/remember this. :p

I guess I had forgotten the rent control thing. Maybe Chandler made tons of money doing whatever it was that he did. Now that you mention it I do remember it was in the village. Central Perk was the coffee shop so maybe that threw me.

I don't mind stealing bread... oops wrong thought! I don't mind at all assisting someone in their quest of an apartment or at least to answer some questions. It is pricey to live in Manhattan, but as mentioned if you're willing to go to places such as Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, etc you can get a lot more for your money. As to Manhattan south of 96th st, almost without exception you are looking at a minimum of $1600 for a studio (in a 5-6 story walk up) one bedrooms in a similar building for $2000 and up and so on. If you want anything with a doorman or elevator the prices go up quite rapidly. Let me know if you need any help.
