I am looking into learning many different facets of web designing. I would like to just learn on my own, anyone know of what books would get me started? I need something entry level, but not too too basic. Any ideas?

    Hi,

I've been developing for 10 years now. There are so many different areas of development you could concentrate on. If you're just getting started, though, I'd focus on learning CSS/XHTML very well. On the development side, you could then move into Javascript, PHP (or ASP) and XML. I've also had to learn quite a lot about databases (you can start with MySQL)

If you'll be working alone, you'll also need a solid knowledge of graphic design and an application like Photoshop or Fireworks. I've never used Photoshop Elements but that might be good enough for starting out.

Sitepoint has some good books. I don't have this one but it looks like it'd cover CSS well: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/cssref1/
