been talking to ex-band members about our 100+ original songs that we never did shit with. there were 4 of us, 2 have nothing to do with music anymore. the other, the guy i wrote most of the songs with only plays here and there and never plays our stuff, just covers.
ive been going through the "archives" and there are just too many good songs there, i cant just let them die. so i made contact with all the ex band mates ( including my ex wife, she played bass ) and all are cool with me doing something with the songs. all but the guy who co wrote most of the songs.
basically he would come up with a riff, i would write the vocals and melody, and arrange the song.
its been 5 years since we have worked together.
but he says "yeah, record the songs, but i would like to play on some of them".
FUCK !
where i have gone with the songs , some of them, it wont even sound right with him playing guitar on them.
this could turn ugly. i really dont want it to, but it could.
if i record them with other people, he would get full credit for a co-write. if i would ever make money from the songs , he would get his share. i'm paying to copyright the songs, even under his name. but man, i dont want to go through the legal stuff, let alone just the conversations with him. not to mention, he will never do anything with them if i dont.
i know, im being a complete baby about this, but it just seemed like he didnt give a shit about these songs until i asked if i could do something with them
sorry just had to vent.
god i feel like a fucking diva all of a sudden. i just need some advice from my peeps !
thanks, and sorry its soooooooooo fucking long.

i've always wanted to be in a band, but maybe I don't.
can you sing? u dont need to write any songs either, just sing.
you sing and i'll dance, that's the band!

Most of the sticky situations I get into are thankfully enjoyable and fun and dont involve such fascinating things as copyright and entertainment law.;)
Wolf I feel for ya man, you need to stick this one out and do what ever it takes, because if the songs are good enough and it's what you want you cant let the past hold you back, if it need's this guy coming in and playing on them just to satisfy him then you may just have to bite your lip and stick it out, he'll probs lose interest again anyway.
This guy has an attachment to these songs because he helped create them so that's probably why he wants to be involved. It sounds like if you are open to letting him be involved in SOME way, you can probably get his consent. Would there be a way to let him feel a part of what you're doing that wouldn't get in the way of how you want to do the songs now? I think if you treat his feelings as if they matter, you can probably get the job done without a hassle.
But then, I don't know if he has any big ego or personality problems.
