The Doctor

I'm fucking pissed!

Ok...who goes to the store and buys something that doesn't have a price listed? Well, I think the doctor should be the same way. Hospitals also.

My husband went for a routine visit. During the visit, the doctor told my husband to quit smoking. Now, everyone who smokes knows that everytime you go to the doctor, they tell you to quit smoking.

The insurance company paid the routine visit and then we get an extra bill in the mail. That fucking doctor charged an extra $120 for a smoking consultation. He didn't go to the doctor to be lectured about smoking. He went to the doctor about a suspected hernia! No warning, just a bill.

Called the doctor and they said that they don't change claim codes. It's against policy. Went in for a routine visit and got screwed. WTF?????
I will hold the candle until it burns up my arm. I'll keep taking punches until their will grows tired. I will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind. I won't change direction and I won't change my mind.

Hey, believe me, I feel bad for you guys. I can't begin to imagine how much the last fortnight would have cost me in America... :o And what happened to the OP's husband is completely screwy, and almost seems illegal to me. :(

Since I've quit sports where my insurance was covered and I didn't have to do anything, I've quit going to the Dr. pretty much all together except for an emergency.

I just tend to deal with it myself just because of the shit everyone tries to pull.

I'm sorry you're going through that. These kind of stories seem to be popping up more and more often lately. Any way to appeal your insurance company to make them pay it?

It's like going to a shady auto shop, "fixing" stuff without telling you and giving you the bill.

That's really shitty though coming from a doctor.

There's always a bad egg... and whether he should quit smoking or not is beyond the point, he shouldn't get charged for unsolicited "consultation".

if you were doing something that was harmful to your body, wouldn't you want a doctor letting you know?

yes, but $120 for 'stop smoking'? that's not right.

its not.. thats why im thinking this is kinda bogus.... insurance should always cover that.... hmm here is an idea.. be pissed at the insurance company

Why would we be pissed at the insurance company? They already paid the doctor for the regular visit- $160.00. The insurance company knows that this is a bullshit shady deal and they're not paying. You're not even allowed to see a doctor without filling out a form saying that you'll be responsible for anything the insurance company won't pay.
Come to think of it, I've just decided not to pay it either. The doc already got her money, so f her. Usually set up my bills as soon as they come in, but not this one. Perfect credit. I'm tired of getting shit on.

I'll sleep better tonight. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

    That really sucks! :(

But don't blame the doctor; blame the healthcare system. The doctor didn't create the billing codes system that says a smoking consultation is a separate charge. She just does her best job at doctoring and then checks all the applicable boxes on the form she's required to turn in.

I used to do medical billing and it's called ICD-9 Coding. The doctor just checked off a particular box and he can try to collect money for it. He probably put a note in your hubby's chart that says SMOKER so he was able to check that box on his coding for billing. He probably honestly thought he would collect more from the insurance company. If I were you I would appeal to the doc himself (not his billers) and have him get it ADJUSTED off. Just ask him, I'm sure it can be done. Good Luck.

  • I bet now he wished he already quit smoking.

Next time its double if they smell cigarette smoke. If they see evidence of a cigarette or tobacco it's an automatic $1000....or voluntary 10 days imprisonment.

Nice health care system! Pretty ridiculous.

Tell him he can get the money back automatically by not buying cigarettes for a couple months.

smoking is naaasty.. nasty shit.. makes me sick just thinking about it....sucking in all that toxic shit over and over again...stinking up everything and hacking up brown shit all the time.

    ugh...

A consultation service that was supplied without consent just amounts to a rant.

Tell the doc to fuck off and have a go at trying to get the payment through the courts.
