that's cool and I respect that everyone has different opinions... but, like chime, I struggle to remember any of the sections you refer to
ahhh, where to start? the description of rolling through the hills in the west with no gas, the description of the party in the mountains, the discussion of how "normal" people aren't happy unless they have something to worry about. I wish I could be more specific but I don't really feel like digging out my copy, but it's all funny and its true and its things that are worth experiencing. Perfect travel book, its always one of my companions on my solo backpacking trips, just makes you appreciate being alive and free and not tied down to anything.
"Ah, life is a gate, a way, a path to Paradise anyway, why not live for fun and joy and love or some sort of girl by a fireside, why not go to your desire and LAUGH..."

Unless you're American or there's something wrong with you, you grow out of Jack Kerouac after about the age of fifteen.

I never thought that would happen to me with the beats.
It did.
Having said that, I still like Kerouac's writing. Just not enough to re-read. Never did finish Big Sur.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

What, you come back from Ireland with a damaged liver and an ego and bash one of the great writers of the 20th century? You're never too old for Kerouac man.

By far my new favorite author. On the Road has been my favorite book since I first read it a few years ago, and I recently read Dharma Bums and am about to start Maggie Cassidy. Talk about writing from the heart, everything he writes is so pure and emotional, it's almost overwhelming. If you ever want to read a life-changing book, read some Kerouac. Any other fans around these parts?
I need to get this book. My friend recently read it and she says its amazing.
So I gotta read that. Plus, its original, in english, which is another reason I wanna read it.
Overwhelming you say? i gotta prepare then haha
