... is a dork. He reminds me of this guy:

Wally Cox aka Mr. Peepers aka the voice of the cartoon Underdog aka a recurring panelist on the original Hollywood Squares.

How did wimpy little John Clayton become ESPN's football guru?

Great reference, Wally Cox! Spot on. I don't know why, but I sort of like Clayton...I'll bet all those jocks from his high school days are shaking their heads at his elevated media status...the guy they used to rough up and stuff into lockers. :D

I think Mike Emerick, the guy that does NHL for Versus and the NJ Devils is the biggest sports dork of all. His nasal voice and endless, stupid references to color the game are unlistenable for me. When he does games, I watch on mute. The best guys doing NHL were the ESPN guys (Thorne, Pang and Clement). The guy on NESN for the Bruins is good too. I also like the Wings guys on FSD, Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond.

Yep, the guy had a varied career, that's for sure. Perhaps we are both nerds for knowing this?! :)

I saw Clayton at D.I.A. when I connected with a flight to Vegas. He looks even worse in person.

Hey knuckleheads, the guy had cancer. He looked like a wimpy little dude before but cancer made it worse. I always thought Sean Salisbury was a dick to him because he was outsmarted by a guy who probably never threw a football in his life.

I always liked when those two(Salisbury and Clayton) go at it at one another.

Clayton won up on Salisbury though during a segment where they were talking about who's the better actor in Disney's "The Game Plan" because Salisbury's scene was cut out of the theatrical release.

I agree, Gabers. Salisbury is the lockerroom bully, kinda like JBL for you inside wrestling fans who hazes the smaller guys.

    Maybe he meant Merril Hoge?

On February 14, 2003, Hoge was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Chemotherapy treatments began soon after, and went on for five months. Finally, on July 2, 2003, after completing the chemotherapy, Hoge was cancer-free.

Clayton had cancer a year or two ago, he took several months off while undergoing chemo. I couldn't find any news about either though. Weird.
