I all my many years, I had never heard this expression until the PIT. Is it a regional thing? Do people actually say it? Like when you hit your thumb with a hammer? :p

It reminds me of the Mormon "oh my heck." I'm assuming "oh, snap" translates to "well, fuck me"
If I had known then what I know now...

Here 'oh snap' would mean 'I have the same', 'me too' or 'I agree'

From the card game 'Snap' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snap_(card_game)
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Yeah or a "I can't believe you just went there!!" meant more in joking shock than disbelief.

I never heard the phrase until I watched My Name is Earl.

  • I remember saying that when I was into Pokémon cards in 2000 or 2001. Shit's so outdated. "Oh snap!" is too.

Yeah sorta like "Oh, shiiiiitttt, that's crazy"
thats what it means in NY :]
  • I guess the first time I heard it was back in the day with Biz Markie's "Just A Friend" song:

"So I came to her room and opened the door
Oh, snap! guess what I saw?"

I immediately translated it into meaning "gadzooks" or being the cool pre-teen that I was at the time, "holy shit!"

The commercial for House on USA has Hugh Laurie saying it. Fucking obnoxious ad. Fucking obnoxious phrase.
  • I first saw it on that horrible "That's So Raven" show.
    "The customer...is always...an ASSHOLE"

    "The world fascinates me."

"Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you"

I always thought "Oh, Snap!" meant "Gotcha!" or something like that.

I hadn't heard until then either... so I just figured trashy people used it :p and then I read it on the pit one day and when I saw who posted it, well that only confirmed what I learned from My Name is Earl. :D;)

Some kids in the mid-90s were still using it eventhough it wasn't "hip" to say the phrase anymore. :o

I think the most popular slang was "bad boy" when I was growing up. It's kinda like the word "fuck" but cleaner...you can use "bad boy" with any sentence.
i.e. "Tiger Woods is a bad boy" = Tiger Woods is a great golfer.
"Lets get this bad boy started" = Lets get this (party/car/homework/ect...) started.
"Man, look at those bad boys on her" = Man, that chick has a nice rack.
    ...and so forth.

"Oh snap" is about the farthest thing from gangster on the planet.

I would've said the same thing until I started reading people's example of where they've heard "oh snap!"

    *My Name is Earl
    *House
    *That's So Raven
*Biz Markie (as much as I love the Biz, he's no gangsta)

Selling a 5-year old kid to Turkey is pretty gangsta though, I suppose.

Sike (psych) is from the mid-80's. Snap has to be like '89-'91.
