Such a waste!
As a police officer looks on last week, a helicopter lowers a bundle of marijuana plants into a trailer near the Boundary Peak Wilderness in Esmeralda County, 250 miles northwest of Las Vegas. It was the second time a large marijuana growing operation was discovered in the area within a month.

12,700 marijuana plants seized in Esmeralda County
Authorities raid second large, remote garden this year
For the second time in a month, authorities in Esmeralda County have destroyed a crop of marijuana in a remote canyon in the shadow of Nevada's tallest peak.
As part of a joint operation by the U.S. Forest Service and Esmeralda County sheriff's office, more than 12,700 mature marijuana plants were removed last week from a canyon in the Boundary Peak Wilderness, about 250 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
"This is a major garden," said Esmeralda County Sheriff Ken Elgan.
It took a crew of about 30 people most of a day to rip out the plants, which were being cultivated about a mile from the end of the nearest road, Elgan said. The crew was flown in by a helicopter that was also used to ferry out the plants and about 1,000 pounds of trash from the site.
The marijuana was discovered two canyons away from a crop of more than 3,000 plants that authorities eradicated in late August.
After the first crop was discovered, authorities launched reconnaissance flights and spotted the second crop from the air.
Investigators now suspect the two crops may be linked.
The larger crop had been planted in a grove of pinyon juniper trees at an elevation of about 9,400 feet. The site is not far from Nevada's highest point, the 13,140-foot summit of Boundary Peak.
"It's very dry and very remote. This is not an easy area to get to," said Forest Service spokeswoman Nancy Upham.
The operation included drying racks and irrigation pipes which fed the plants from a nearby spring. Elgan said the people tending the crop had to hike in and out of the site.
Investigators spent several days watching the area before removing the plants, but the cultivators did not return.
No arrests have been made in connection with either crop of plants. Upham said evidence collected at the second back-country marijuana farm suggests a link to Mexican drug traffickers, but she could not elaborate.
In July 2007, authorities discovered and destroyed some 40,000 marijuana plants found growing in several locations along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada.
"It does seem to be a growing trend in the Inyo National Forest and on all public land in the West," Upham said.
Elgan said a small amount of the plants were saved as evidence. The rest was destroyed.
Trafficking the amount of marijuana found in Esmeralda County is a felony subject to a prison term of two to 10 years.
