I know there are very few Barry Bonds fans out there, but still....

The feds are now considering criminal charges against the wife and mother-in-law of Greg Anderson - Bonds' trainer who, to this point, has not cooperated - in an effort to get Anderson to talk.

I mean, fuck, how desperate are they to send a guy to jail? The supposed reason for Bonds to talk to the feds in the first place was to take BALCO down. With or without Bonds' truthful testimony, that was accomplished. It's been 5 years and untold millions of dollars and our goverment is still pursuing this. It's a fucking joke and it pisses me off!

BTW, by all accounts, Greg Anderson is actually a pretty nice guy (and that makes this even worse)...

the crimes and lies being committed by our congress and wall street ceo's, yet nothing is being done to them. while barry bonds may serve time for lying to federal court?

barry bonds gets 2 years for lying about steriods and causes no harm to the
    american public.

corporate ceo's and wall street crooks get no time for lying to the american
    public and causing much harm.

From the original message I gather that innocent people are being jailed to force someone else to talk.

In 1986 I read a book about Ethel and Julias Rosenberg which basically stated

"it was suggested that part of the reason Ethel was indicted along with Julius was so that "the prosecution could use her as a 'lever' to pressure Julius into giving up the names of others who were involved."(today's words from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_and_Ethel_Rosenberg) Then of course, she was executed.

I hate that bullshit method of jailing innocent people, too. I mean, really, that one book report stuck in my memory over 20 years later, and I don't remember a stitch of calculus from the same time period.

Any true fan of baseball cannot be a Bonds fan in this day and age. Before he took steroids he was already a future Hall of Famer. But now he's a cheater, liar, and should be used as an example by the Feds to anyone who thinks taking steroids or lying to the courts is okay.

And he did do harm to the American public. He, along with McGuire, Sosa, and others, took the national pastime and made a joke of it. They made the respected home run records of Maris and Aaron cease to exist and did it by cheating. Then none of them have the guts to admit it in court. Letting these guys off teaches kids all around the world that you can lie and cheat and get away with it. None of them should be allowed in the Hall of Fame and all of their records should not be counted any longer.

Wy should we praise cheaters and cowards?

i think you misunderstood the point i am trying to convey. i agree with everything you stated above.

the point i am trying to convey is that the fed is losing their mind over barry bonds and want to make an example of him. when the fed should be losing their mind over the greedy ceo's/investors/market analysis crooks. the fed needs to make an example out of them.

can you imagine the message it would send to corrupt individuals, if a man can get 2 years for lying about steriods. how many years do you think a man/woman should get for misleading and lying about the companies health.

also....it took bonds/mcguire/sosa and their steriods, to get the american pasttime jump started and interested in watching again. if i remember correctly, baseball was suffering from a lack of attendance, until the homerun race started.

Um..lying under oath is a real crime. Using steroids illegally is a real crime.

Shocking that imalive would start a thread defending a Giant. I know you had fun during the playoffs living vicariously in the Dodger thread ;)

What do you think of the Renteria signing?

While the home run race definitely helped and was the big thing that got people back into baseball, it would have come back. Baseball is too good of a game to be held down too long. Also around this time, there were the Cone and Wells perfect games which also got people back into the game. People came back to the game after the 1919 World Series without steroids.

I'd forgotten all about this thread. I wasn't defending Bonds or even arguing whether or not he deserves jail or whether or not he ruined the game. My point was the absurdity of the lengths our goverment has gone to. Threatening his trainer's wife and mother-in-law?? C'mon!

Today, we were talking about OJ and the "how dumb can you be?" angle. A buddy said "there are no smart criminals." I said "yeah, there are... they're called CEO's." :p

Not to get all Moving Train on this, but some people would say there are many in the Bush administration (and previous administrations) who have committed real crimes and those people will never, ever get close to an indictment.

The two things have nothing to do with each other. Both Bonds and Bush committed real crimes. You think if they dropped the Bonds case, all those lawyers would roll up their sleeves and go after Bush. Here's some news: lots of people commit crimes all over this country every day and one person being prosecuted for a crime doesn't stop other people from being prosecuted.
