The US gvt. & pro-sports

I would like to start out by saying that my favorite sport is Baseball, my favorite team is the Yankees, and in the NFL, my favorite team is the Giants. So basically I'm probably the last person who would be stressing about this crap.

Okay, I understand congress looking into, what essentially is illegal drug use, in Major League Baseball.

At first I thought, why the hell do they care so much? Can't the MLB regulate this themselves.. and until recently, I realized that, no, they couldn't. And I actually commend the government for looking into this and bringing the steroid use to our attention.

NOW.. Here is what I don't get.

Why the hell is Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) trying to look into this whole "Spy-Gate" thing?

What's his business?

I'm not saying it's stupid that he's doing it, but I want to know, why and how can he do this?

Steroids are one thing, most are illegal in the US. But since when does an NFL rule about filming the other team, lead to a possible congressional hearing?

They are talking about subpoenaing some golf-pro, who filmed for the Patriots 5 years ago, to a congressional hearing.

Also, Arlen Specter is mad that Roger Goodell (NFL Comish) "destroyed" evidence concerning "Spy-Gate". The NFL made a ruling on this, Goodell said all evidence complied with exactly the Patriots said, and the NFL ruled on this matter.. Why the hell is Arlen Specter getting his panties in a bunch over this? Did he lose a bet?

Seriously. I would like to know how relevant any of this is, especially when our country had gone to shit. "Oh, let's mess with the NFL instead of poverty."

Mariotti, for all his negative bullshit, brought up a good point: It's the anti-trust agreement. That special exemption makes sure Congress will always involve itself in these sorts of situations, especially when a war is pissing people off and folks are losing their homes. Mariotti was not the first to mention anti-trust angle, but as far as I know, he's the latest. It is a huge waste of time, though, Congress investigating this cheating scandal, and it just makes me hate the Pats and grandstanding politicians all the more.

Well, I don't think this is really the fault of the Pats. Sure, they got caught "spying", but it was over 5 months ago. The NFL investigated, ruled, and fined. And from what I hear the spying was only considered spying because of some minor stipulation in league rules. I don't know any real facts, were they even released?

No, this, to me, is just another dumb ass reason not to trust our current government. Sure, thousands of people are dead because of an unnecessary war, but because the most watched event in TV is coming up, someone decides that it's a good idea to investigate the NFL.

  • I'd like to see the $ amount that is being spent on this type of shit. I'm sure the Mitchell report (which did NOTHING) was quite pricey.

I think that Specter thinks that Goodell is covering up evidence that would very much taint the Pats past couple seasons, which he probably is.

  • Arlen Spector is an ass.

There is a war, a recession and a housing crisis in this country. Plus gang violence is rising as fast as health care and gas prices. And this jerkass is worried about how the NFL handled its own in house business?

Even if the government should get involved (WHICH IT SHOULDN'T---but for argument sake I'm gonna say something) I can understand the logic if the integrity of the game is at stake since people spend millions of dollars on tickets / merchandise / etc with the reasonable assumption the games aren't fixed. But if a single--or if the rumors are true, a few-- teams cheat, that isn't the same thing as the league fixing games. If the league was fixing the games, maybe it should be a crime, but that isn't what happened here. Individual teams always look for an edge, and some cheat. How the league handles the matter is not for the government to decide.

What's next? Arlen Spector saying there needs to be a government investigation into the bad call that decided the 1985 World Series?

The Mitchell investigation cost around $20 million and was funded, from my understanding, by Major League Baseball.

Bingo....it's all about the anti-trust exemptions....which are in effect priceless to the leagues.

Spector could use a facelift for that droop of a face that he has. Now that would time well spent compare this ridiculous road he's heading.

because the eagles lost to the patriots in the super bowl a few years back, and this guy has nothing better to do than whine about it.
