daughter's first show!

My daughter's first show is next Tuesday - we're going to see Neil Young and special guests (I can only hope they'll be extra special Seattle guests!) Our entire family loves his music, and I surprised my eleven year old daughter and husband with fan club tickets. My six year old is sad that he doesn't get to go...he's a fan as well. Told him he had to wait until he's at least 10 :)

We have GA tickets - I just couldn't afford the good seats - and didn't want her first concert to be in the nosebleed section. I'm looking for any advice for younger fans attending shows, especially in the GA section!

We'll get her some earplugs, not sure what kind to look for? They're all pretty standard, aren't they?

Anything else I should know?

Daughter says she wants to hear "I am a child" - so if anyone has the connection, please make the request! :D

Cheers!

Edit - to say that of course we're not going anywhere near a mosh pit!!! We'll be on the floor and towards the back...and there are three adults to protect her (my sister too.)

  • Is this an acoustic show? If so, this is a great concert to take a 10 year old to. Otherwise, I dont think a regular rock concert is a good thing in the GA level for a kid. I hate to see him get injured.

It's very refreshing to know that the youth of the world is being exposed
to such wonderful music and images other than the bubble gum and
cheesecake stuff that so many kids are preferential to.

Neil is an icon in every sense of the word and the message he sends
is one that every man, woman & especially child should hear.

High praise to you for taking her to see one of the greatest musicians
    of our time.
    Enjoy!!

you are in for a great time. His setlist recenlty have been awesome! i mean really really good. one is posted in the neil young thread in other bands. I would post it here but maybe you like to be surprised. Lets just say neil brings it all old school jams and old school acoustic classics mixed with some new unreleased songs.

it is a neil show... I've been to my fair share and the crowd is very cool and have seen many kids at neil shows.

no mosh pits or crowd surfing. I would not worry about bringing kids.

Cool, never been to a rock concert version of neil. I have just been to the acoustic ones. Those shows were pretty damn good!
  • Nice!!
I took my little girl to see Neil last year in Boston, first show & she loved it. Neil as a first show is AWESOME... no matter what you get, it's always a great show. Besides, it beats the hell out of their first concerts being something lame like Hannah Montana. (Not that this would even be an option for my daughter, she hates anything Disney related.)

My little girl fell asleep during the acoustic portion, but that was a great sign.
You probably know this, but if you go to sugarmtn.org, they post all the set lists. Neil doesn't usually change them & I didn't see "I am a child" but you never know...
He's playing "A Day in the Life" on this tour, which I saw him do at Farm Aid and it was FANTASTIC!!

    Have fun!!

    Thanks everyone.

And, oh, wow! A day in the life! what a cool song to hear him play :) I have not yet looked to see what the setlists are, I'll probably give in before Tuesday ;) I'm really hoping that there will be some special songs with some special guests!

As far as her musical taste - her dad and I just play lots of good music and some of it must have rubbed off on her :) She likes lots of her own music - Pink, Plain White T's, Nirvana, and the Beatles come to mind... She likes PJ too - but is not a *freak* like myself ;)

Still wondering if there are any special earplugs that I should be on the lookout for? Or are they all pretty much the same?

    Thanks!

That's what I was gonna suggest! I'm pretty sure they're all the same, but just in case, maybe ask your pharmacist if they have specific kids ones? They might be smaller (if they exist!)

Hmm other than that just make sure that she's watched at all times cos I've been at gigs where even adults have gotten lost, I can't imagine it being too difficult for kids to run off! Oh and bring lots of water and snacks, gigs are long and sweaty! :p But i'm sure you know that already! ;)

  • Thats awesome, didn't go to my first show till 16, saw this Pearl Jam band. I wouldn't be concerned about her safety, I see kids at Dropkick Murphy shows all the time and they're crowd gets pretty rough, myself included. Have a great time.

What an awesome first show! My stepdaughter has seen a lot of concerts (being that my fiance is actually in a band), but I can't wait to take her to her first PJ show!

I went to a show on Friday and spoke to some folks, and they suggested getting both the earmuffs and earplugs. The earplugs have ratings from 22 to 33. We got the 33 earplugs and 22 headphones - so together it's 55. We got the headphones in the drum section of American Music. They were a bit expensive...oh well...worth it.

And we weren't able to find a babysitter for the younger guy - so hubby has to stay home. Because of this, I have an extra GA ticket to the Neil Young show tonight in Everett - asking $75 (what I paid) if anyone is interested PM me.
