Anyone else just stunned by this guys black and white American landscape photography?
I've always been into his photography so was well excited to go see an amazing exhibition of a large amount of his work. The first time so much of his work has left his American based trust.
Its currently running at the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh until the 19th April. Its an amazing exhibition and if anyone is within a realistic travelling distance to Edinburgh I would recommend coming to see it.
I guarantee the images of the elements will take your breath away.
Everytime I see his huge landscape scales they remind me of how insignificant I am against the elements of the world. There before us there after us.
There is also a small collection of Scottish black and white landscape photographer Lindsay Robertson work.Very inspired by Adams style.
Both well worth a reason to visit Edinburgh. The gallery is in the city centre, right beside the train station.

his work is breaht-taking! and if you consider HOW he got his shots, carrying around a HUGE large format camera, etc.......even more amazing. his work is amongst a small elite of photographers known and lauded for their detail and amazing contrast/depth/tone in black and white. sets a high bar, particularly his tonal quality, such depth....and amazing detail in shadows, and such a range from white to black. stunning indeed!
    Stay with me...

What a great guy he was!

I'm reading a book called The Last Season. It's about Park Service backcountry ranger James Morgenson, who disappeared in the mid 90's. They both lived near Yosemite National Park. They became friends in the 60's. It just gives a great account on the type of person Ansel Adams was.....aside from his talent.

    His photo's are astounding.

I absolutely love his work. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be in Edinburgh next month. I think I'll come a day early now just to see that exhibition.

    Cheers!

Oh fantastic. You definately should. Its really easy to get to but if you need directions P.M. me.
You'll really enjoy it.Its all low lights to avoid damage, but it adds to the intensity of the exhibition.
    Have a great time.

Absolutely, thats whats so amazing.I took my 15 year old niece with me and she was walking around mesmerised. Then made me laugh when she said in all innocence "he must have a really good digital camera". :D
I laughed and explained he began photography in 1917 or thereabouts and died in 1984.
She has a renewed respect for his work. :)
The way he was so ahead of his time with enviromental conservation is inspiring to.

His photos might be the most recognizable photos in the world. There aren't many photographers who you can pick out almost instantly.

Also love his work! I got to see a small showing of his original prints here in Virginia and it's one of my most memorable moments.

I caught the '100 Years of Ansel Adams' when it was here in L.A. I suggest that anyone within striking distance of an Ansel Adams exhibition... GO!!!
We have all seen Adams' work in coffee table books, prints, calendars and posters... but, there is nothing like seeing the actual photographs. Not quite as amazing as seeing a Van Gough in person... but still, well rewarding for the effort spent.

I understand what your saying but I just love photographs so much more than paintings.

For everyone recommending I go to the actual areas the photo's were taken I would LOVE to.It must be amazing for you folks that have experienced it.
