I'm heading to London tomorrow afternoon for a school grant. I'm staying in Kensington and will take the rail to Kew for the National Archives. I will have a great deal of downtime. Anything specific that I should make sure to see? Just wanted to get a feel from a couple of Jammers to get their thoughts....on a short notice :).

  • Try and get to the Tate Modern.

If you head to Tate Modern I would also walk across the Bridge and have a look at St Paul's Cathedral. Without paying the entrance you can walk into the cafe in the Crypt.

Also if you are going to the Tate Modern may as well walk along the South Bank. When you get to the National Theatre good place to stop for rest as they have a cafe and lots of chairs (got some special ones at the moment) outside to people watch ... in the evening they sometimes have weird and wonderful entertainment outside. If you fancied going to the theatre The National releases tickets every morning for that days performances (it actually contains 3 theatres)... from there if you walk across Waterloo Bridge just a few minutes walk to either Trafalgar Square (and both The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery) or to Covent Garden for shopping and street entertainment.

What kind of things do you like to do ... touristy, historic, shopping?
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Kidding. I couldn't care less really, this time next year I'll be living 90 miles further up the country.

    It depends what you're into.
If you like music then Portobello road has a few good record shops, a great market, nice food, and a few nice pubs.
Camden has a few record shops and the market, but has generally turned into a bit of a shithole.
If you like cultural stuff then take a walk around the British museum. It's a nice way to kill a few hours.
If you wanna just get drunk then head to Upper Street - which runs between Angel and Highbury stations. You could also have a drink in Filthy McNasty's Whisky Cafe just off Pentonville road. It's where Shane McGowan & Johnny Depp were known to hang out.

Though if it's your first time in London, then you may aswell just check out the touristy areas. Charing Cross Road, Oxford Street, Soho, e.t.c. And take a walk by the river.

Thank you. Whilst dodging stab attacks and getting glassed in pubs I figured I would visit the Natural History and Science Museums since they are so very close to where I am staying. I'm traveling alone so I probably won't spend much time out from my hotel as night falls.

Portobello Road sounds very interesting and a great afternoon excursion. I'll probably visit Harrod's if for no other reason that my girlfriend's birthday is approaching.

I'm a bit on the reserved side so I don't know if pubs are quite for me. I am terribly difficult to try new things (This trip is a first for me) and as I am underage in the states pubs seem a bit terrifying to me. I'll probably walk into one, feel incredibly awkward and make a quite retreat. I'm a bit of a bitch.

Aside from my trips to the archives I have nothing set in stone, I look forward to atleast one day spent wandering through the tourists traps.

Portobello road also has loads of antique shops e.t.c. You just need to go to Notting Hill Gate tube - subway - and follow the crowds.
