NHL Local TV Ratings on the Rise

Awesome to hear this. BTW I'm watching the NY Islanders (4-2 Caps) and what are those e 4 stripes on the top of the right shoulder of the Isles jersey???
According to Nielsen, seven of 30 NHL teams are showing an increase of at least 33% in local television ratings from last season.

Granted, it's early in the season, but the league has to be happy seeing huge viewership increases in markets like Washington (140%), Chicago (71%), New York (33%), and Los Angeles (33%).

Also on the list of big gainers: San Jose (50%), Denver (36%), and Phoenix (33%). Even Buffalo, where ratings have always been strong, is showing a double-digit increase so far (14%).

Nationally, Canadian broadcasters are doing well.

Hockey Night in Canada viewership has grown in all time slots, with the pregame show making the largest gain. It's averaging 527,000 viewers, for an increase of 56 per cent over last year.

The Game 1 audience is 1.348 million, up 13 per cent.

Game 2's 763,000 is 19 per cent higher than last year.

... TSN's NHL telecasts have an average audience of 496,000 viewers, up 21 per cent from last year.

RDS is averaging 773,000 viewers for Montreal Canadiens games, available nationally, up 21 per cent.

GO BRUINS

worst move was leaving ESPN after the lock out. let's see.... you are trying to lure fans back after losing an entire season, so lets not renew our contract with the biggest sports network in the country and instead, have our games televised on a channel called OLN that only 20% of US households have.

nhl2nite on espn2 was the shit.

HD and widescreens make it better, but it still really isn't a sport that translates well on TV (as much as I love it).

I never understood how a sport translated well on TV until I went to an NFL game. Football is unbelievably boring live but it is really good on TV. Conversely hockey is ok on TV but it is blows away any other sport out live.

plus football your view is much better on tv due to all the replays. chances are when the coach challenges a play and you're sitting in the stands you don't know what the correct call is.

For sure. The football game I went to was a good game (Adrian Peterson ran for 296 yards, there was a missed field goal returned 109 yards for a touchdown) but the game was so boring to watch.

There's nothing better than watching a playoff hockey game (especially in Canada) in terms of atmosphere and entertainment.

Some American arenas are good like that, MSG, Joe Louis, but still don't beat Canada, especially places like Calgary and Vancouver.

totally agree....but it is more enjoyable to watch hockey on a wide screen as apposed to old tv's and i think hd is bringing the more casual fan back to watching the sport :)

haha, get rid of the goalie? that'd be some interesting stuff.

reminds me of when i was younger and we would play roller hockey at the local courts and we would lie the garbage pails down and that was our net... you would have to make it in the small circular opening, without a goalie.

Minnesota is a good place to see a game (playoff or otherwise) -- I haven't been to too many games in the states. Minny, Buffalo, Chicago. All were good, but none came close to playoff games in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary or Saturday Night at Maple Leaf Gardens (and I HATE the Leafs).

You're right, I forgot about Minnesota. The atmosphere in Toronto and Montreal is also good, though the new buildings seem to have a different feel than places like the Maple Leaf Gardens and Montreal Forum.

I did like playing Intramural Floor Hockey in college, that was fun. The goaltenders never add enough paddings to block the shots so there were lots of goals scored! :p

When we play street hockey we used Cricket pads for the goalies to drive up the scoring. Being the goalie made the game much more of a challange to stop the ball but I loved it cause i played tough like G. Cheevers. :)

But is it really a surprise that Chicago and Washington are the top 2 teams on that list? 3 of the 4 best young players in the league are on those two teams! If I was in either city I wouldn't miss a game.

I am VERY happy to see Chicago becoming a good team again. And even more happy to see my Bruins doing so well :D

Back in the day I secretly loved the Blackhawks in part because there were out west, 2nd BEST jersey in the NHL, and I loved the old school goalie Tony Espisito.

    Stan Mikita too. :)

Another quick question: During the Isles/Caps game a player for the Isles shot from center ice and it deflected off the referee and into the net. Yet it was reviewed and the goal was eventually called off, I didn't know they had a rule like that, the ref is not part of the play on the ice????

    Oh thanks for the answer.
