I Have A Bad Habit of Burning Bridges

Some of it I can blame myself for but often times I get stuck into situations where I take sides. Most of this happened in my teens and early 20's. I'm 100% sure I'd take a different approach if given another chance to redo half the stuff I did.

Now I'm having a hard time reconciling with people I've been estranged for years. a couple of them acted like they never even knew me. :(
Not that I'm looking for some beneficiary motives other than just kicking-back, chillin' and talkin' about the good old times.

I want to move on like many of you but there are a lot of good folks from the past I'd love to reconnect with.

What does that say about my character? How do I move on knowing I have a bad record of estranged relationships?

  • I don't burn my bridges, I blow them up.

Sorry to hear that, you can try the best you can to reconnect with people, but it doesn't always work out that way. I had a large group of friends in the military that I don't talk to because I had my differences with them. Even worse with my family, but thats what I'm trying to fix now.

Some people I say forget it, but family is important to keep in touch with.

there are past events in my life i'd like to revisit by chatting with old friends and whatnot but the close ones are currently estranged or afar right.

at least i'm trying and making an effort to reconcile my mistakes, one of my friend refuses to even try, thinking that the person(s) will still have the same personality as he or she did as they were younger. wtf? people change, some change for the better...

you know as a kid my friends and i were menacing pyromaniacs. we'd always burn the nature trails and beatup cars near the lake up.

i wonder if any of that have to do with my way of burning relationship down.

maybe i'm just thinking too much.

this friendships or relationships? i can't talk to any ex's really. i either don't care or they do not want to hear my name mentioned ever again. as to friends, i left a lot of them behind just because we went different directions. there were no hard feelings, we just don't have much in common anymore.
    and like that... he's gone.
  • burn enough bridges you will learn... especially when you realize have no good job references, no friends or family... Ive seen it many times :D

i dont know if id say i burn bridges - i guess perhaps i do, but only after they have been pounded into an unstable little strip. I like to think im a pretty loyal friend, but yea, i guess if i get stomped on often enough ill eventually shut the door on that relationship

it frustrates me tho, the way sometimes friends that you've had for years will suddenly put something ridiculous and pointless above your friendship. You may try hard to stick by them or give them advice ... i know sometimes its not wanted or wont be listened too ... but who do they think helps pick up the pieces once the thing they think is so damned important falls apart??

and yea - theres the evoloution thing too - ive certainly drifted apart from a few friends, certainly everyone does ... in my tree is a great little soundtrack to this problem

This first sentence says it all. No one forces you to take sides. You make the choice. Own up to it, apologize and move on. There are always more important things in life.

Also, I realize I'm operating off of no specific information, but honestly...

Those things were done 5-10 years ago, did you not read the rest of the paragraphs? I'm trying to reconnect.
