Hi all,

I'm going to travel to New York for a couple of days this December....
are there any "Pearl Jam spots" I must see when I'm here ?
I'm bringing the family over for a short trip on my 40:th birthday but I don't know where I should go and what to see part from the obvious ones like empire state, statue of liberty and central park...
Please give me some tips on where to go and what to do..

Any help is much appreciated : )

Are there any real good record shops who sell used records and stuff like that, or anywhere I can get cool stuff that's not around everywhere ?

peace
Everyday................is Pearl Jam Day.

Except Sundays, that's Ed day.

Go to the museum of natural history, or the metropolitan museum of art. There are some cool record shops in the village.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.
  • eat pizza

    eat bagels

if you're into music history, you can swing by the Dakota, right near Central park, where John Lennon was killed

If the writers strike is over, you can try and get tickets to a whole slew of shows, such as The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, letterman, etc...

And for me, the one NYC must do is to see the Blue Man Group

I don't know about any pearl jam spots persay, but there are some record stores in the greenwich village/east village area. The empire state building may be obvious but I've heard good things about Top of the Rock, which is 70 stories or so and might be a lot less crowded than the Empire State building.

Some people also go to the World Trade Center site. I'm not a fan of going down there for obvious reasons but I could understand the reason why someone from out of town would want to see it.

And if you get thirsty or hungry. there's a subway and a starbucks on virtually every block..

New York is a blast. A lot of my close friends from college are from there, so I am down there a lot. You'll have a blast! And Christmas is the best time to be in the city, so you're going down at the right time. Virgin Megastores there are always tourist packed, but the place has a good selection of music, and I always like to go there. The big one is in Times Square, and the other I enjoy more since it's less crowded, which is in Union Square. Definitely check out MSG tho for a sports event, whether it be the Knicks (although a laughingstock) or the Rangers.

    Thanks everyone for your input,
Feels like I will have no problem to pass my time there...... although I'd love to see a rangers game with my homeboy Lundqvist as keeper, but I heard that it's difficult to get tickets, is it possible to get if I just turn up at the venue or do I have to buy in advance ?

Once again, thanks to all for your input : )

I'm really looking forward to go !!!

not to scare you... but practically no where.

i've worked for marriott for the past 7 years, 3 of which in the city, and it is damn near impossible to get a room, let alone a cheap one in december.

it's the peak month... you are talking between 400 & 600 a night.

    what's your definition of affordable?

If I compare to Sweden, a reasonable good hotel would be around USD 200/night.....
But being in NY I would guess the double

    as for hotels,

do yourself and your wallet a favour and look into the suburbs , which are proximal enough to jump a LIRR or NJ Transit Train into the middle of everything.

good call on that bathgate, there a few hotels in jersey city that might be cheaper and are a short trip on the PATH train. also not sure if the original poster likes baseball, but he should do the Yankee Stadium tour, which is given in the offseason.

and thanks amentschick for the accolades.

I do that - the only drawback to that is if you're tired during the day and want to rest but go back into the city its kind of a drawn out process. Also, if you're shopping, you have to carry your stuff all day. But overall its convenient and I stay in Jersey frequently. Definitely is cheaper.

Thanks to all for your suggestions !
Now I know to look for a hotel out of town, MSG is a must see, greenwood cemetary sounds interesting and the record shops in the village too : )
I think I'm going to have awesome time !

Thanks again New Yorkers of the world !

BTW; is Red Banks NJ anywhere close at all ? I think there's a shop there with stuff from director/comedian Kevin Smiths films, I really love is early stuff. DS

red bank is not that far, maybe an hour from the city depending on traffic

its a cool little town with a good music venue
    the count basie theater

ranger tickets: check craigs list and dont buy any ticket fast printouts
personally I think its better to suck it up and pay a broker rather than dealing with the dudes outside the stadium or the face to face meeting with a stranger from craigs list

pearl jam spots, I can think of only one
the limelight, but Im not even sure if its open these days

definitely the museum of natural history-coolest place -good coupled with a stroll in the park

in addition to the jersey side, there are also some reasonable hotels north of the city in white plains and tarrytown, but the train ride is a bit longer (20 mins from white plains)

the only record stores Ive ever visited is generation records, kims, and bleeker bobs-all of which are ok, but they can be pricey

lemmie know if you need any food suggestions
    GOOD LUCK

the Record store he speaks of- is Jacks Records .

It is on Broad Street, and Bruce Springsteen has been seen there, as well as Kevin Smith.

granted- these are both rare , but have happened.

the restaraunt 1 block off from jacks is also excellent, but regretably i cannot remember the name.

Also- The Count Basie is maybe 3 or 4 blocks walking from around the corner from Jacks,.

    enjoy.

Generation Records is probably my favorite record store. Definitely check it out, and most things are reasonably priced. It's at 210 Thompson Street.

Another excellent record store is called Rebel Rebel. It's all the way down Bleecker.
