I don't understand. Is this a game? Explain??

It's like a virtual chat room where you can earn money, build property, join groups, etc. I've heard some business men set up their own properties there and hold real life meetings. It's been on the news a few times due to some of the dodgy porn that comes along with it.

This article explains it better: http://secondlife.com/whatis/

Anyway, I'm finding it hard to get into. I always thought I would be hooked but I have trouble earning money and apparently no one on there has a sense of humour. (Don't go around telling people they look like dorks). ahahahaha
  • After surfing the link, it seems very interesting and could be somewhat fun. Sort of reminds me of the Sims a little, but on a much larger, more interactive scale. I have no problem paying for internet/online music etc. And it's one thing to pay a monthly fee, but I'm a little skeptical about spending hundreds (even thousands, like some people do! According to some news reports I've seen on the topic) converting real US currency into Linden dollars to buy and build things that aren't tangible in real life! To each their own.

For laughs check out the incident report on the site. People get suspended for days for disturbing the peace, assault, harrassment. There goes my Second Life fantasy of being a hitman or sniper :(

Grand Theft Auto 4 is your friend, much more fun.:)

I messed around with it a little. It's pretty strange, actually and not my cup of tea. But I had a co-worker who loves it and started designing 'virtual clothing' for avatars (the clothing line is called Rughster, check it out). He actually started pulling down REAL cash! Now, he's like a landlord - he bought an entire island in Second Life and charges rent for other vendors to set up shop in his mall. He's actually making close to $1,000 every month just from rents and his virtual clothing business. Insanity...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

It is! I just can't get my head round it. It's just bizarre!
How did he earn real cash through it? I can never understand this.

I've never tried it myself but I hear it's a breeding ground for peadofiles and strange fettishes. I'm sure that's not what it's all about, but something to bear in mind.

we watched a doc on this in our communication studies class. its just so stupid, this woman just spent all day on this second life chatting to this guy and the husband of the woman had to look after children 24/7 and she ended up flying to england and marrying this dude and stuff.

its just such a waste of time, you can buy clothes and body parts and all this crap, i think its for people who arn't happy with their lives.

It is weird stuff! I really hate spending money on these kinds of internet intangible things. But making money that way can't be bad :p

Btw, the fact that ppl on there don't have a sense of humor there just kept me from checking it out...haha. That is why instead I am here, The Message Pit: "Fun is its middle name...!" ;)
Why not be mediocre and be the best at it that you can be?

Some people do take it very seriously. We were looking at it the other night and went into a nightclub watching these characters dancing around and they were writing stuff like 'WOOOOOOO Banging tooooooooooon'! 'This is awesome'! But it's not REAL, so...

I just find it really weird. I wanted to get into it but it's too difficult to get the hang of.

Yea, I don't fully understand the making money thing either. Apparently, you get fake money in the game (Linden dollars, I think) which works like real money within Second Life. But somehow, if you get enough Linden dollars, you can convert them to actual cash outside of the game. Very strange, but a good gig if you can get it apparently...

I have to say, this sounds very interesting...my only knowledge of the game is this thread. I could see people getting way to into this though...in a creepy D&D kind of way.

completely agree with you, i couldn't have said it better :)

it's such a ridiculous game! why live a "second life" if you want to do all these things in real life? just go out there and get the life you want......ugh those people are sad.

Maybe you can join then and I can have at least one Pearl Jam friend. I've got 'Pearl Jam' fan written above my head because I joined the group but as soon as I walk into a room, everyone else walks back out. :D:D

btw, you don't have to pay for it unless you want to build property.

Do you have to pay just to play it?
I know you have to use real money to buy things and such.
    Pirates had democracy too.

No but it gets a bit boring. You can't really just chat to people. It's not like here where you know you have something in common with people and there's really no goal to it unless you want to buy property and maybe make some money out of it. You don't need real money to buy clothes and such though.

I've been reading up on it.

I actually got bored of it very quickly. It runs too slow on my computer. I still find it fascinating though.

You'll have to tell me your screename one day and I can look you up. I'm already part of some Pearl Jam club but I've never used it yet.

Yes, it is fascinating. So far I've managed to grab $1 and now at a camp trying to earn some free $ for sitting- lol.

I PMed you my screenname and yeah I found the PJ fan group but I don't know how to get to the base of the group.
