Photoshop help! PLEASE!

Can anyone help me with this? and my example might be hard to help with...

I'm trying to edit a picture of four people infront of a building...i want to edit the picture and keep the people (subject) untouched but I want to alter the appearnace of the background...

can anyone help me with this, i think I need to use layers...but I am a very inexperienced photoshop user..

    Give it to someone who knows what they're doing. It's not worth the stress (for us Photoshop-illiterates). :p

    Use the lasso tool to select the people, copy them on to a new layer, then tweak your background how you see fit.
