A London man is facing criminal charges after police say he intentionally killed a Canada Goose in a downtown London park Saturday (Aug. 9).

Police received a complaint in early Saturday afternoon about a male in Harris Park who had captured and killed the Canada goose.

When an investigating officer arrived, the suspect was found still in the park and still in possession of the dead animal.

Witnesses in the area told police the man had captured the goose, "and then caused serious physical harm to it resulting in the goose's death," police said.

The suspect, Scott Douglas Mitchell, 38, of London, faces charges that fall under the rarely used Section 446 of the Criminal Code, which makes it a criminal offence to willfully cause unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to any animal or bird, police said.
