I'm thinking of taking a job there and I'm looking for some information from people who have been there. Anybody?

I grew up in SE New Mexico, so I'm kinda soured on it, hehe.
Lubbock is indeed closer ...
Looking at gogole maps, Lubbock looks to be about 100 miles away, Albuquerque, about 250 (as the crow flies) ...
I was in Santa Fe last year (again, not even close to Hobbs) ... beautiful country ...
But, yeah ... looks way the hell away from anything.
If you (PJ Saluki) don't mind me asking, what kind of job would take you there? Roswell, NM looks close ... you going to work for the government?

Not to be picky but Clovis is an hour from Lubbock so Albaquerque has to be at least 4 and a half hours away. But if you do take the job, feel free to drive up and see me, It's like two turns on the highway to get to clovis.
So basically no point to this thread other than that I moved from beautiful st. cloud, minnesota to clovis, nm this year and pretty much hate it. Only good thing is that lubbock is a straight shot down the highway an hour. I love Lubbock, never been there before I moved here to clovis, but it's a great city.
Oh and ps, sorry again if i'm being picky, but Roswell is hugely dissapointing aside from the fact that I found a great shape copy of Lou Reed's "The Blue Mask" on vinyl at an antique store. Roswell is two hrs from me and it's really nothing special. But if you like lakes there is a place about 20 miles outside of Roswell called Bottomless Lake State Park, and it's gorgeous. Swimming year round. We (my wife and I) just found out about it and went about a month ago.
I'm from Albuquerque, and I'll admit I've never spent any time in Hobbs. (Why would I?) New Mexico is beautiful, but that part of the state is a wasteland. Plus, I only know one person from Hobbs and she's completely crazy.
Of course, if the job's not forever, it pays a lot of money, and you'll love it, I'd take it. At least there's a low cost of living out there.
Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
That's probably the right amount of time.
My family lived there in the early 80's while my mom went to cable splicing schooling.
I remember it as this little patch of green in the middle of a tumble weed and brush filled dusty desert.
A tornado hit about a mile outside of town while I was there. It hit the trailer park. I'll NEVER forget the way the wind kicked everything in our yard around.
I'll also never forget the thunder storms. There was nothing but flat desert behind our concrete block back fence. We could see the lightning from miles.
Oh, yeah. Our next door neighbor was a reporter for the local paper. One of his best captures was of my little sister letting a catepillar walk on her hand.
Exciting!

I moved to Roswell from the Midwest to also take a job with a newspaper (hard news). My advice is to take the job. Its true; New Mexico is pretty desolate but it is also incredibly beautiful. I would focus on work all week and then on my days off I'd take day drives to places all over the state. It got painfully boring at times, but I can tell you, the experience I gained came in extremely useful when obtaining a job in a bigger city. I lived there about two years ago and still consider it one of the best decisions I made. Plus, to be honest, those papers don't really expect you to stay more than a year.
Good luck! This industry is tough but a lot of fun, too.
