I just want to take a moment to say that Dunkmans new signature is quite possibly one of the funniest i have ever seen. Fooking awesome.

'Firefighters have a slidey pole. All firefighters have this!! England, China, Venezuela, Afghanistan. They all have a slidey pole! To get them from the first floor to the ground floor. I just thought why not have a room on the ground floor? Right next to the fire engine?'.

carry on peoples.

that is all...

  • I suppose if they made fire dept's much larger in sq footage on one floor, this would be possible. Then you have the issue of moving horizontally v.s. vertically about the same overall distance anyways.

Sliding with the assistance of gravity has proven to be faster than walkingthe approx same distance.

That about sums it I believe...

    time for a new sig...hehe

i'll disagree with that and i'll offer some scientific evidence of my own..

    1. the room where the firefighters lounge around should be right next to the fire engine.. not at the furthest corner of a much larger building. i mean they shouldnt have to run past the cafeteria, lockers, gym, firemasters office, etc etc before they get to the truck.. just have it open plan and the guys sitting 10 feet away from it?

    2. firefighters wont walk the same distance.. they run.. and running is faster than walking.. also 8 firefighters could all run at the same time to the truck... whereas there would be only one guy getting onto the slippy pole at one time, and 7 guys all standing at the wee hole itching to get down.

    3. this post is so boring that as punishment i'm going to set fire to my eyes.

I would like to see a human being capable of running run at 9.8 meters per second per second (acceleration of gravity)

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that some firemen somewhere in the world have actually sat down and thought about all this already, in between sitting around staring at the ceiling all day :D:D:D

but if they are on the ground level and all men are 10-20 feet away from the firetruck then they will get there before the men upstairs who are also 10-20feet away from the shiny pole.. and they still have to form an orderly line to get down the pole... you're point is valid if all 8 firefighters sat around the big pole in a puma like state of readiness... but they dont.. they play pool and watch tv...

thats cos them boys are fast runners... either that or are really smart and have built their station to have men near the truck anyway.

the point of this is that we shouldn't deconstruct a comedian's comments or they all become futile jokes..

see.. its funny, witty, etc... but then someone will come in here and say "well its not actually a small world it would take you 4.18 years to walk it at an average speed of 3.23 mph.."

    its a joke

The fastest olympic sprinter can do 100m in about 10 seconds. At the acceleration of gravity, one would cover approx five times that distance in comparison.

Then they still have to get suited up, so maybe a few seconds, if any, they could actually save reaching the truck it is not rally a significant consideration. If anything any appreciable time saved would be found gearing up, rather than actually reaching the truck imo. Highly repetitive processes are usually a certain way for a reason is my understanding.

  • According to Metafilter... Oooooo...hehe

Q: Why bother with the fire pole? Why do firefighters slide down a pole? Wouldn't it be easier to just have them wait on the same floor as the fire trucks? Also, if the pole is so great, why don't they have them in Police stations? As undoubtedly cool as the pole is, does it really save that much time?

A: The difference is you don't need living/sleeping/cooking quarters for the police. Because fire stations have to be strategically/centrally located in the community, It makes more sense, especially in densely populated areas, to stack the living quarters on top of the garages. In most cities, real estate is limited and expensive. Most fire stations don't really have room for anything other than the garage on the first floor.

Solution: burn down a few houses to make more room.
