Help?
Anyone have anything positive to say about this place?
Looks like I may be moving there... as I have to move somewhere.
I have a sister there... Outside of Providence in a rural part. CAN'T LIVE WHERE IT'S TOO RURAL.
I don't know anyone else in the state. :(
Where are you moving from? Why the concern?

I'm just nervous as I don't know anyone and don't know if I'll like it there.
My sister is about 15-20 minutes outside the city. It's pretty rural. You can't walk anywhere from where she is. I like to walk to a lot of places. She and a I are a lot different and have very different ideas of fun. However... i have always thought it seemed boring in RI. I live on Long Island.
I'm a single mom and i need to relocate. THAT is something that is very hard to do in a place where you don't know anyone. So for now...while the housing market still BLOWS I need to find somewhere to buy a house and relocate. At least for a few years. For my son (age 2) ... RI will be great. He has cousins there and all that good stuff. Me? I'm afraid I'll be bored and far worse... lonely for fun and friends. And fun. Is there any kind of music scene for when I do get to do anything other than work and be a single mom in a new city?
I need to reinvest in the housing market while it's still low. Doing so on Long Island is out of my price range. Can't afford the taxes!!!!!!!!!
So. Rhode Island? It's OK? There's fun stuff to do other than Water Fire???
Could not have said it better myself. There's plenty of stuff to do.

beaches are very cool
Thanks for your input. I REALLY appreciate it.
My sister is in North Kingstown. I know it's not that cheap... but yeah. Coming from here... Jeez Louise. Taxes on even the worst of homes in the crappiest of neighborhoods are running about $8000+ here on Long Island.
And please...allow me to say. I don't WANT to stay on Long Island. Just hadn't REALLY counted on doing this move all on my own when I started my plan 3 + years ago. There is so much more to this relocating thing when there's a kid involved. And there is so much more to relocating when you're doing it solo. That is why FOR NOW I need to move somewhere where I have family.... Rhode Island was never really in the plan. :(
Are there cool little neighborhoods where you can walk to a bunch of things? Like I don't know...a library? A market? Stores? Restaurants?
Obviously I have to go visit these areas to get a feel for them. But...
It's not the GREATER RI area I'm interested in. I know about what I can do on the weekends.. getaways to Newport, Boston, coming back to Long Island.
It's the day to day. When the work day is over and I want to take a walk with my kid to get an ice cream, or a piece of pizza, or whatever. I don't know. Are the city neighborhoods "happening" at all?
my experience with prov has been the north end (ok), the east side (posh as far as prov goes), and the providence college/rhode island college area. the east side is the most $$, but i think it might be more of what you're looking for in terms of community. brown u is right by there, which has it's own cool little identity. i owned a house right in between prov and ri colleges, and it was a great area. of course, i had 3 liquor stores within 1/2 mile from my house in different directions, so that was a good thing for me! anyway, that general area is known as the 'elmhurst' area.
regarding shopping/libraries/etc, all were within walking distance (under 1 mile) from the places i lived.
'Stone Is God' and 'cat72' may have some other suggestions given their RI experiences
Thanks and thanks.
Liquor stores are a good start.
I think the east side is going to be a little costly for me.
Thanks so much.
there's still a lot of somewhat dangerous areas, so just make sure you know where and where not to go.
it's an ok little city. not super exciting, but I think you could be moving somewhere a lot worse!
Cool Cool Cool.
Thank you!!!
CityMouse is correct saying that you can walk everywhere in Providence. It's a great smaller city. You'll be a nice small trip over the bridges from Newport and a short drive from Narraganset. The south coast of Mass (Fall River/New Bedford) has some great Portuguese food and Seafood. Cape Cod is an hour and a half away.
the commuter rail goes right to boston too.
Anyone/anything else?
I'm starting to feel a little better about this.
I think...
Yeah, if you don't know how to drive like a jerk, I suggest you learn.
That too.
there's a dunkin donuts at every stoplight. or so it seems in warwick.
I'm from Long Island.
I could teach you all a thing or two about driving like a jerk.
Long Islanders bring it to a whole new level....
I must learn of this coffee milk.
Feeling better....
Providence as a city is just OK. I wouldn't go crazy over the music scene. Back in the mid-90s when Lupos and the Strand were both in full effect, it was different but now the best you'll see is one visit per year from a band like Spoon.
Providence does have a decent social scene. It's liveable. Again, though, just OK.
If you're going to live anywhere in the state, look at places like East Side of Providence (not to be confused with East Providence which is not the same thing AT ALL), or Barrington (which is dry, be warned), Newport, North Kingstown or the Edgewood section of Cranston. These are the places where you'll at least find sensible zoning & some thought into how the town was laid out. Yes, there are a handful more, but not many. Certainly not Smithfield, or Johnston, or Providence as it runs near PC. Stay as far away from Woonsocket & the mutants who live there as you possibly can.
A word about Rhode Island.
It's still 1965 there. People are REALLY stuck in their ways, more so than anywhere else probably in the country. I grew up in RI, lived there 20+ years, moved away a few years ago, family still lives there. I go all the time. I know what I'm talking about.
People get jobs there & they never leave them. I mean NEVER. You'll find people who have had the same job since the early 60's- and they are not rare.
They don't leave the state, they don't drive longer than 10 minutes without thinking they have to stay someplace overnight.
Nothing EVER changes in that state. Except big businesses like Fidelity keep coming for the tax break, which gives the recent grads someplace to go play during the day & marry the girl in the next cubicle & live happily ever after.
Now that's 100% true. LOL.
this is funny shit right here! and true!!!
