Caught Illegally Downloading

  • I consider most bands/performers out there now a days to be thieves them selfs. Putting out full cds worth of shit asking 15$. I say download it if you listen to it more then 3 times then go out and support them!

Doesn't matter what you think. These bands are the artists, they produce their work, and they deserve to get paid to do it. If you steal it, you should get caught.
    Really there's no argument.

I give you the "Weezer" argument.

The only problem I have is when I grew up in the 90's, the music industry inflated the price of CD's where I had to pay $19 to listen to 29 minutes of horrible Weezer songs (blue album is an exception).

Weezer, you owe me at least $60 or four free future albums!!!

I actually agree. That said, I download music, tv shows and movies. Not in huge quantity, but I am guilty and knowingly pirate. Odd cause downloading aside, I'm a pretty big square when it comes to acting according to fairness etc.

We all have choices to make and if you think you're getting ripped off by artists who make bad overpriced albums, we have a choice to not buy their stuff or buy the individual song from itunes etc. We are not entitled to free stuff. IF I did get busted, I would not be happy about it but wouldn't contest it or complain.

I hereby confess that I download but would be lying if I said that I am going to stop anytime soon.

It does matter what I think, its my money. And its not the bands who are going after the money its the record company's. I buy from the bands i like. Sampling the record before i buy it is not stealing. And EVERYBODY downloads music/movies/tv shows. If you say you don't ur fucking lying!

Fuck that, when you buy these records.......you are giving minimal to the artists and more to the asshole record industry execs that keep throwing shitty trends in our faces. If he wants to pay the artist, he can give money to them by seeing a concert or buying a shirt.

But yeah.. thats messed up.. you should say no to torrents and use a news leeching service like Newzbin.. (it's twenty bucks a month but WELL worth what you get for it and you can't get nabbed)
it's just easy money for them!

Agreed... you get to try on clothes before deciding if you like them... anything in a shop you can SEE and even touch before deciding to buy. Buying music is sometimes like a lucky dip... unless it's your favourite band some people like finding new music... and that's hard to do without spending a lot of money.

I think it's very easy to demonize the record industry and make them seem like a couple of filthy stinking rich Americans sitting around smoking cigards. But this is an entire industry with jobs which vary widely.

I doubt the rise in illegal downloading is going to cause mass unemployment in this particular industry or anything (but who knows?). But I occasionally illegally download, and I know what I'm doing is wrong. I guess it's the fact that it's so easy and 'everybody is doing it.' When you get down to it, it's stealing. There's no escape from that.

I will say this though - the record industry is pretty outdated and if it wants to go to extreme methods to stop piracy (didn't they sue an old lady for thousands of dollars?) then they should at least buck their ideas up and realise the value of the internet.

I download a little music, but no movies or tv shows. Mostly unreleased stuff with the occasional album download for sampling. Every few months I go through and delete the stuff that I don't care for and most of the other stuff I try to buy w/in the next few months.

Has anybody with a sizable collection of hard copy music been caught. Just curious if they would treat somebody that pirated all their music harder than someone, like me, that has spent a nice little fortune on music.

I would like to see them do something about the early leaks. There is something cool about hearing the songs so long before most people, but first impressions are so important, esp for music. And often the leaks aren't even the finished product. How long have people known the songs from Chinese Democracy? I have heard 3 or 4 versions of some songs, and not one of them is as good as the finished product.

I can't think of an album I have had to wait for the release date on, in awhile. It's a victory when the the cd makes it to the store before some kid steals it out of the back room, goes home and dumps it on to the internet, a week before release. How many albums has itunes "accidentally" put up for sale early,

So today I received a notification that I have been caught illegally sharing copyrighted files. My university shut off my internet access so I had to go to IT to sign a form in order to get it restored. The form wasn't an admission of guilt but basically said I have been notified. While there, the guy couldn't give me much information but said I basically have to wait around and see if I get sued or not. Most people that are sued settle for around $3,000-$4,000. He also told me that there is no timetable, some people have been sued 2 years after getting initally caught.

If , umm, hypothetically, I was doing this, it would have been using a torrent client to download tv shows and an expensive engineering program. Also, I would have been using Peer Guardian under the belief that it drastically reduced the chance of getting caught.

I don't want this to become a debate of the morality of downloading, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar situation.

my brother is the first person i know to ever get caught. the first time it was because he downloaded a specific movie. he recieved a cease and desist letter from the internet provider. he called them up and told them that it was a virus (in the letter it said to disregard and call if you had no knowledge and if you believed it was a virus).

well, he continued to download and got caught again and immediately had his internet shutdown...no legal issues though. he has since had the internet turned back on.

after downloading Balls of Fury last year, i recieved a cease and desist naming the exact movie. come to find out it is movies released through a specific company.

What ISP do you have? Because I live in Ontario, and Bell most certainly limits download speeds, usually from around 5pm to midnight on weeknights.

Let's not forget the 'taping music from the radio' scandal in the 90's. Look how that RUINED the recording industry and made all bands bankrupt!

It pretty much screwed Poisen, Ratt, and Dokken. We should learn from history. Otherwise what does the future hold for the Nicklebacks of the world??? Not only will the artists suffer, but what about all the strippers and drug dealers out there that will have lost business?? I can only imagine how the custom car pimping industry might be crippled if we don't change our ways . . .

Illegal downloading affects the entire industry people!

the way i understand it is they go after the people who are SHARING files. if your using a torrent, your screwed either way because in order to download, you have to be uploading at the same time, correct? so there's no way around that. so you use something like limewire where you don't HAVE to share files, just go on and see who has what, but maybe use peer guardian or something anyway.

  • Saw someone ask "if you're not downloading torrents, what are you using"

One word: newsgroups. You don't have to upload anything, and download speeds are fast as shit since the files are hosted on a server. It's not free, but $30 or so a month for unlimited downloading can't be beat.

I download almost all my music from blogs. No chance of getting into any shit there. If you run one and someone sends a message asking for the files to be removed, you can just do it.

That said, the UK is far more relaxed about this.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • Just pearl jam albums? All other artists don't matter?

I wasn't saying other artist don't matter. What I was saying was if you are a poster on this board you clearly are a HUGE PJ fan. The people on here that are illegally downloading should at least be buying PJ's albums because of how much of a fan they are. Don't take it so literal.
